The event took place on the August 09, 2007 in the community of Gitwe, zone of Buruhukiro, municipality of Rumonge, province of Bururi. ImageDr Rose Gahiro, Burundi's Minister of Public Health launched the programme in the presence of Dr. Tarande Manzila the WHO representative in Burundi, the provincial governor, provincial parliamentarians and other local officials, Dr Marie-Alice Deville from SCI, Dr Adrian Hopkins and Anita Smeets from CBM, Dr Onésime Ndayishimiye and Dr Norbert Birintanya the directors of the National NTD Control Programme and the National Onchocerciasis Control Programme respectively, 56 community distributors from the municipality and over 2000 villagers.

Speeches were given which put the focus on the importance of the National NTD Control programme and its integrated approach as well as on the importance of the programme being owned by the population with the commitment of the volunteer community distributors to treat their population against these debilitating, disfiguring but easily treatable diseases of poverty.

The ceremony was punctuated by dances, songs and sketches relating to the NTDs performed to the rhythm of the “Tambours du Burundi”.
