Molly Stevens

Professor of Biomedical Materials and Regenerative Medicine, Imperial College London

For all the advances of modern medicine, there are areas of treatment that seem rooted in the past. Broken bones are screwed together, worn hips replaced with metal, scarred hearts left untreated to beat on, weakly. Stevens's team is working to change this, by helping the body to heal itself. Her biotech company, RepRegen, aims to regenerate damaged bone and muscle inside patients' bodies. In 2006, she was the first woman to receive a Royal Pharmaceutical Society conference science medal in its 40-year history. She works with children's charities, because her research could help fix failing organs in the very young. She hopes to encourage other women in academia to feel able to balance work and home lives.
