Anita Patel (PhD, MSc, BSc) is an applied health economist with 30 years of experience of designing, directing and delivering health economics research. She spent 20 years at King’s College London (1994-2015), where she ended as Deputy Director of the Centre for the Economics of Mental & Physical Health (now known as King’s Health Economics). She then joined Queen Mary University of London (2015-2017) as their first Professor of Health Economics to develop health economics capacity at the medical school; a key part of her role was being the lead health economist for the NIHR-supported Pragmatic Clinical Trials Unit. Since 2017, she has undertaken health economics consultancy in various forms: independent consultant (2017-present), the Academic Director of a not-for-profit consulting company within the University of East Anglia (2022-2023) and most recently as a Director at Ipsos UK (Public Affairs team) (2021-2024) leading the development of health economic capabilities to deliver evaluations of policies and programmes in the public and charitable sectors. Anita has held various expert roles for external committees, expert groups and steering groups. Currently, she is the health economics advisor for the Inter-Collegiate Stroke Working Party, which produces the national clinical guideline for stroke and runs a stroke care audit in England (Sentinel Stroke National Audit Programme; SSNAP).
