AB - This article describes the general principles of point defects in ceramics and how they affect material properties. First, an overview of intrinsic atomic point defects is provided, followed by a description of the reaction processes that lead to atomic disorder and the accommodation of non-stoichiometry. The thermodynamics of defect clustering are reviewed next. Extrinsic point defects are then considered to show how doping affects defect concentrations. Following this, electronic defects are considered. For both the dilute and concentrated defects, particular attention is given to the structural response of the lattice and the impact this has on material properties. The reactions governing the concentration of electronic and atomic point defects are combined to form a Brouwer diagram. Finally, the migration processes of point defects in ceramics are described, including the interstitial, interstitialcy and vacancy-mediated mechanisms, as well as atypical collective and diffusion processes.
