BIO
Sam is a PhD student at Imperial College London. He is part of the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) in Sustainable Civil Engineering. His research focuses on the microstructure and durability of concretes prepared with supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs). The research is conducted in partnership with HeidelbergCement and is supervised by Dr. Hong Wong and Prof. Chris Cheeseman. Sam received a BA and MEng degree in Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering from Cambridge University in 2017. His industry experience from summer internships includes working as a Site Engineer for Laing O'Rourke on Crossrail at Liverpool Street Station. Graduate Teaching Assistant CI1-131: Structural Mechanics The aim of the course is to provide students with a basic understanding of the behaviour of common structural forms, based on a physical understanding of how these forms are able to carry external forces through the development of internal forces in structural elements. This concept is extended to derive stress and strain distributions within basic structural members. CI2-211: Creative Design II This course aims to inspire our students and give them an appreciation of the purpose behind the theoretical teaching they receive as well as to explore essential engineering skills, working in groups and using problem-based learning to find solutions to real engineering projects and introduce mathematics as a logical and structured discipline. CI2-212: Constructionarium This course aims to give insight and practice in the role of the engineer as a contractor and give students an appreciation of the relationship between hands-on engineering and the theoretical teaching they receive. Students get the chance to practise working as engineering firms taking responsibility for construction planning, process and product as well as gaining experience on-site from start-to-finish of a construction project. Students explore essential engineering skills, working in groups and using problem-based learning to find solutions in real engineering projects. CI2-213: Structural Design The primary aim of this course is to provide an introduction to the behaviour and design of reinforced concrete and steel structures.
