Notebook no 1, 161 ff, 23 cm. Journal of observations on specimens, notes on reading, etc. There are three leaves made at an earlier period at the beginning of the book:
3 'Peculiarity of nerve of Helix', 27 September 1846
5 'Muscular fibres of bee', 24 July 1846
6vo Notes, principally on specimens from the towing net, etc, of various orders of the Coelenterata, from 6 January 1847 to 20 July 1848. These leaves were numbered 11-315 by Huxley

Volume of drawings of oceanic hydrozoa, 1847-1849, 76 ff, 30 cm
This volume consists of drawings, mainly in pencil, of assorted sizes and on varying kinds of paper, which were perhaps arranged in their present order by Huxley himself; many were reproduced in 'The Oceanic Hydrozoa; a description of the Calycophoridae and Physophoridae observed during the voyage of HMS 'Rattlesnake' in the years 1846 - 1850', published by the Ray Society in 1858. Some were perhaps originally arranged in blue paper folders, of which only the covers now remain, each with a title in Huxley's handwriting; these are:
