Supporting the personal and professional development of researchers and research-associated professions is key to create a positive research environment.

Imperial is committed to attracting, nurturing and empowering the next generation of outstanding Science, Technology, Engineering, Medicine, and Business (STEMB) research talent. The university is a signatory of the Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers and the Technician Commitment, a reflection of our ambition to support the career development of researchers, technicians and the different roles that contribute to research. There is a wide range of development opportunities for both staff and students at Imperial, and a dedicated team in the Early Career Researcher Institute (ECRI) delivering award-winning and sector-leading training to support the professional and career development of our researchers, including guidance and training in leadership and management, and providing a good supervisory experience for our doctoral students.

We also have a number of staff award schemes recognising the achievements of staff at Imperial.  These awards are for all staff, at all levels, across research, teaching and professional services roles, who have demonstrated a valuable contribution to our mission.

As a signatory of the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA), Imperial is committed to ensuring that we will not consider journal-based metrics, such as journal impact factors (JIFs), in assessing the research achievements of staff or candidates for recruitment.
