Thursday 11 April 2024

This workshop brought together researchers and professional, technical and operational staff - many of them for the first time.

The aims of this workshop were to:

  • Identify why it matters, in research and society, for data to be open, transparent and high-quality
  • Identify domain-specific challenges, barriers and opportunities in engaging with Open Data practices at Imperial

Session one: Fostering a  Culture of Open Research

Ian Walmsley, Provost of Imperial College London, introduced Open Research at Imperial, why it matters and how this project aligns with Imperial's strategy and vision.

Session two: Openness and Scrutiny in Data Science

Chris Gullick, Chief Data and Artificial Intelligence Officer, Ofgem, introduced the overall topic: why do we need openness and transparency of research data, what does it mean for data to be high-quality, what are the general challenges of embedding open data practices and quality?

Session three: Data in Decision-Making and Society

Hamid Khan, Open Research Manager at Imperial, introduced the opportunities and challenges of using data in decision-making, why reliability matters, and what the ideal of reliable tools might look like.
