The Environmental Research Group aims for impactful public involvement, engagement, and participation across our research teams. Our goal is to engage with and involve the public in scientific dialogue, offering ample and varied opportunities for active participation in our research. We take a proactive approach to ensure our work is accountable, transparent, and relevant. We strive to foster a culture that values the active participation of the communities we work with, recognising them as the true experts of their own experiences.
Our approach is flexible and adaptive, incorporating best practices and continuously learning from our experiences. This has enabled us to build strong relationships and trust within the communities we serve, and to ensure that the public and community voice impacts our research, while also upholding Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) principles.
We actively engage with individuals from diverse ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds by participating in local festivals with interactive and engaging air pollution awareness activities, and by organising community discussions and workshops on environmental pollution. We also regularly deliver talks and STEM activities in schools to raise awareness about environmental exposures and health issues, while nurturing a passion for science. Our engagement and involvement activities take place in a range of settings, from our own labs and offices to community centres, churches, and parks in local neighbourhoods.
