The CUP Global team at Imperial College London is widely recognised as one of the leading research units at the forefront of evidence synthesis of epidemiological data on the role of lifestyle factors on cancer risk and prognosis.
The World Cancer Research Fund International (WCRF) Global Cancer Update Programme (CUP Global) (formerly known as the WCRF Continuous Update Project), aims to periodically review and evaluate the epidemiological evidence on the role of diet, nutrition, anthropometric characteristics, physical activity, and sedentary behaviour on cancer prevention and prognosis.
The CUP Global team at Imperial was created and is funded through a generous long-term commitment by the World Cancer Research Fund International network of charities:
- World Cancer Research Fund UK (WCRF-UK)
- American Institute for Cancer Research (AICR)
- Wereld Kanker Onderzoek Fonds (WKOF)
Since its inception in 2007, the CUP Global team at Imperial has conducted over 22 large systematic reviews. The CUP Global team compiled the largest database of cancer research in the world, containing data extracted from over 12,000 academic publications, which represents more than 220,000 results, on associations between a wide array of lifestyle exposures and cancer development and prognosis.
The Imperial team and other international research collaborators summarise and critically appraise the research findings in new or updated systematic literature reviews (SLRs) and meta-analyses. The results are reviewed and evaluated by an independent international Expert Committee and an Expert Panel convened by WCRF to develop evidence-based recommendations on lifestyle choices that aim at reducing the risk of developing cancer and improving survival.
The CUP Global programme has yielded numerous publications in leading scientific journals, and its recommendations are used by the public, patient groups, public health regulatory agencies and policymakers internationally.
