AB - Recent x-ray laser research carried out at the Rutherford laboratory has concentrated on examining recombination pumping in H-like and He-like ions. Laser irradiation of thin fiber targets establishes a rapidly expanding plasma column in which population inversions are created during the recombination cascade. Experimental results in H-like carbon and fluorine systems will be presented along with the preliminary analysis of Li-like Al and Cl systems. © 1988 SPIE.
