Daytime events

In June 2017 we gathered to see the house of Thomas Carlyle who was resident in Chelsea when Chelsea consisted mainly of market gardens to supply the rich houses.  Thomas was a writer and social commentator and his house which is part of a terrace is preserved from the time that he lived there in the late 1800's to 1900's.

The Charterhouse was built in 1371 and was a monastery until the Tudor period when it was dissolved.  The building has also been a private house, a boy's school and still today an almshouse for the armed forces.  We visited Charterhouse in August 2017.

In August 2016 on a beautiful sunny day we visited Fenton House in Hampstead Grove.  The house dates from 1686 and was refurbished in the late 1930's by Lady Binning who died in 1952 leaving the house to the National Trust.

The house contained collections of Chinese porcelain, 20th century painting and drawings and early keybooard instruments.

The walled garden contained an orchard, kitchen garden, rose gardens and formal terraces and lawns. 

In early May 2016 the DEG visited the exhibition of Sicily at the British Museum

On 8 March 2016, the DEG went to Portland Place to visit the BBC and look at the various sets.  This photo shows the DEG on The One Show set.
