It had always been my dream to pursue my Master's from a renowned institution like Imperial College.

Before commencing postgraduate study at Imperial College London, I completed an undergraduate degree in Biotechnology at Panjab University, India.

I was curious about doing a Master's in Applied Biosciences and Biotechnology because I've always been fascinated by how living organisms work and how we can use that knowledge to improve our lives. The subjects I'm studying, like Antimicrobial Resistance and Bioinformatics, are exciting and important for addressing real-world challenges. I also got the chance to work on interesting projects and internships that made me more passionate about this field.

Choosing Imperial

When choosing a university, it was crucial for me to find a place with a strong academic programme, experienced faculty, and access to cutting-edge research facilities. Imperial checked all these boxes and provided an environment that fostered learning and personal growth.

I attended online webinars prior to applying. The sessions provided valuable insights into the course, university culture, and the resources available to students. It helped me get a better understanding of what to expect and made me more confident in my decision to apply.

My advice for people going through the application process is to thoroughly research the universities and courses they are interested in. Attend any available webinars or information sessions to get a feel for the institution. Tailor your application to highlight your genuine passion for the field and demonstrate how you can contribute to the university community. Lastly, don't be afraid to reach out to current students or alumni for their experiences and advice.

Joining Imperial

Starting my Master's at Imperial was an enriching experience. The faculty and staff were supportive, and I found the learning environment to be both challenging and inspiring. I appreciated the emphasis on practical learning, which allowed me to apply my knowledge in real-world scenarios. Also, it was a great transition from Indian education system to a new education system.

Attending orientation events and university-organised networking sessions provided excellent opportunities to socialise and build friendships with others who shared similar academic interests. Engaging in study groups and collaborative projects allowed me to connect with my fellow students.

Studying the course

I have had an exceptional experience throughout the course, which offers a well-balanced blend of diverse and valuable modules. These include Antimicrobial Resistance, Bioinformatics, Python, Biotechnology Entrepreneurship, Genomics, Proteomics, Plant and Animal Biotechnology, Synthetic Biology, and Plant Immune System.

This comprehensive array of subjects provides a holistic view of various domains in Biotechnology, enabling students to identify and pursue their specific areas of interest for future endeavors.

However, the highlight of the course was the research project. Collaborating as a team allowed me to develop and excel in various skills. Thus far, I am thoroughly enjoying this course and the opportunities it provides for personal and professional growth.

The curriculum is intensive and covers a wide range of topics, which sometimes leads to a demanding schedule. Balancing multiple assignments, projects, and deadlines requires effective time management and organisation skills. One always feels the need to participate in all extra curriculum activities held at Imperial which is challenging.

Additionally, some of the advanced concepts and technical aspects in certain modules, such as Bioinformatics and Entrepreneurship, posed a steep learning curve. However, with determination and seeking support from professors and peers, I have been able to overcome these challenges and continue to thrive in the course. The difficulties have also presented valuable opportunities for personal growth and resilience.

Engaging with peers from different parts of the world has not only exposed me to various cultures but has also taught me how to collaborate effectively in cross-cultural settings.

Collaboration is a key aspect of our interactions, and we often work together to tackle challenging assignments and research projects. The atmosphere is supportive, and students are always willing to help each other understand complex concepts or share study resources. This sense of camaraderie fosters a positive and conducive learning atmosphere, making the course an enriching and enjoyable experience for all.

Overall, being part of Imperial's global community has been a transformative journey, fostering personal growth, cultural awareness, and a sense of belonging to a worldwide network of talented individuals dedicated to making a positive impact on the world.

Future plans

I intend to seek employment with a pharmaceutical or life science company, either in London or in my home city. I am actively applying for positions in these areas. Initially, I was unsure whether to pursue a PhD or opt for a job. However, as the course is coming to an end, I have become certain that I want to gain real-world experience and pursue a job in my chosen field.

I’ve made use of the Careers Service, which offered a variety of webinars covering topics like CV building, interview preparation, LinkedIn profile optimisation, and networking. Additionally, I benefited from three in-person appointments where I received valuable feedback on my CV and cover letter. The support and guidance provided by the Careers Service were immensely helpful in my job search journey.
