Fargena is a student from London who was seeking a postgraduate course that would enable her to excel in the world of aeronautical engineering. Keen to take her interest in aeronautics to new heights, and inspired by alumni, Fargena applied to study an MSc in Advanced Aeronautical Engineering at Imperial. She shares more about her journey to Imperial and her experience as a student, from her course to defining her next steps.

Growing up, I gravitated towards creative pursuits like drawing, painting and designing. During my GCSE studies in art and design, I thrived in blending creativity with problem-solving, which is where my interest in engineering first started. I then proceeded to do a work experience at Arup as a Multidisciplinary Engineering intern which solidified my interest.

The prospect of accessing high-quality education in Aeronautical Engineering while studying in London really appealed to me. That's why I pursued my postgraduate studies at Imperial. The university offers unparalleled opportunities, industry connections and a global reputation that makes it a world-leading institution.

Choosing Mathematics, Physics and Economics for A-levels immersed me in the world of STEM. What really inspired my passion for aerospace engineering was attending talks by organisations such as The Institution of Engineering and Technology. A pivotal moment was hearing Dame Maggie Aderin-Pocock discuss the future of Martian travel, inspiring my focused interest in Aerospace Engineering. Discovering Dr Aderin-Pocock's background at Imperial College London prompted me to find out more about the university. So, I attended open days and participated in the Accelerate into Maths & Science programme with Imperial during sixth form.

Becoming part of the campus community

My experience at Imperial College London has been immensely fulfilling. Settling in was incredible and smooth as I attended several events by different societies and made an effort to meet new people along the way. For example, I attended iftars with Islamic Society which added to a sense of community. This helped with creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere where I quickly felt like I belonged.

The university's world-class facilities have been instrumental in my academic journey, providing resources for both learning and making applications for graduate roles. Highlights of my time at Imperial include engaging with AeroSoc regularly and learning about new companies, receiving the opportunity to interact with engineers from Airbus catered towards Women in STEM and forming valuable connections with peers and mentors. Overall, my time at Imperial has laid a solid foundation for my future endeavours, and I am grateful for the enriching experiences and opportunities it has provided.

Student life in Aeronautics

Studying at Imperial College London is both challenging and rewarding. The academic rigour pushes students to excel, while the supportive environment fosters growth and learning. The best thing about my course is the hands-on approach to learning and the opportunity to work on real-world projects.

The most challenging part has been managing the workload and balancing academic demands with extracurricular activities. To overcome this, I've developed effective time management skills, prioritised tasks and sought support from professors and peers.

Developing beyond my studies

Throughout my time at Imperial, I've actively sought out various development opportunities to broaden my skills and experiences. This includes engaging in careers day events and attending talks and events run by AeroSoc and DataSoc. These experiences have provided invaluable insights into the practical applications of my studies and allowed me to develop transferable skills crucial for my future career.

The Data Science Society and Amazon coding class are both fantastic resources for students interested in technology and programming, as well as those interested in building computational skills that would be efficient in any industry especially engineering. The Data Science Society offers workshops, competitions, and networking events, allowing students to enhance their data science skills and connect with industry professionals.

Similarly, the AWS Cloud Club London Launch Event, consisting of a coding class hosted by the society at the Amazon office provided valuable training and insights into coding and software development, equipping students with practical skills relevant to any industry. Both initiatives are highly recommended for students looking to enhance their technical abilities and explore career opportunities in the field.

Laying foundations for the future

My career goal has been to pursue a path in aerospace systems engineering, particularly focusing on defence or commercial aircraft design. I aim to contribute to the advancement of aerospace technology and play a role in shaping the future of aviation.  Upon graduation, I intend to embark on a career with either MBDA or BAE Systems as a systems engineer in the aerospace defence sector. With an offer from one and awaiting graduate placement in a suitable role with the other. The graduate role will allow me to apply my knowledge and skills gained from my studies at Imperial into practical applications.

Imperial College London has provided excellent careers support throughout my academic journey. I've benefited from interactions with attended guest lectures and skills seminars. These resources have been invaluable in helping me develop professional skills and prepare for the transition from academia to the workforce.
