Nafisah
MSc Environmental Technology
Looking back, I’m confident that choosing Imperial was the right step for both my personal growth and my ability to contribute meaningfully to the community.

While completing her Bachelor’s in Materials Science and Engineering in Singapore, Nafisah found the curriculum and the broad range of real-world STEM applications it covered – from drug delivery to industrial corrosion – fascinating. She picked Imperial to continue challenging herself to think outside the box. Nafisah shares her experiences of moving to London, applying for her scholarship and how she’s looking forward to “navigating the unknown, much like a 'science chef' experimenting with uncharted recipes!”.
Before Imperial
I worked for three years as a Research Engineer at A*STAR's Institute of Materials Research and Engineering, a leading institution driving materials discovery and innovation to support Singapore’s economy. My role complemented my Bachelor’s degree, exposing me to a wide range of STEM concepts while working on improving thermal barrier coatings used in turbine engines for the aerospace industry.
This experience gave me a unique perspective, allowing me to reflect on the broader impact of my work on climate change.
I became increasingly intrigued by sustainability practices and began questioning how effectively my research could bridge the gap between fundamental science and practical applications to address real-world challenges.
Applying to Imperial
I wanted to study at a university that would not only strengthen my skills but also challenge me to think outside the box. Imperial College London’s reputation as a top-tier institution made it an obvious choice. I was drawn to the chance to learn from talented peers and engage with diverse perspectives that would push me out of my comfort zone.
Scholarships and funding support
I feel incredibly blessed to have been guided by two inspirational individuals who introduced me to the ASEAN UK-SAGE Women in STEM Scholarship. The first was a dear friend and Imperial PhD alumnus living in my home country, who knew I was applying and shared Imperial’s scholarship search tool with me. The second was my Option Lead interviewer who I vividly remember being so encouraging and who motivated me to apply for the scholarship.
This scholarship is particularly significant as it is one of the first fully-funded scholarships from the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office available to students from Singapore. It covers full tuition fees, a stipend and flights, for which I am immensely grateful. Without this financial support, covering the high international student fees would have been a challenge. The scholarship also lightens my financial worries, allowing me to focus on my studies without the stress of managing living expenses.
Beyond the financial support, the scholarship has helped me connect with other Imperial recipients across Southeast Asia who are truly trailblazers and a source of inspiration.
Scholarship application process
The scholarship application process was straightforward and well-explained. I knew I had to secure an offer of admission before submitting a scholarship application through an online form on Imperial’s website. The application included a set of short-essay questions focused on your motivation to study STEM subjects and your commitment to empowering women to pursue similar fields. After submitting my application, it took around two months to receive a decision.
My top tips for applying for scholarships:
- Always check the scholarship deadline – Imperial is a globally renowned university, so there are many applicants putting in significant effort to secure their place. You don’t want to have a well-tailored application only to miss the submission date by a day, an hour or even a minute!
- Don’t rely solely on your Bachelor’s grades to support your application – dedicate your time to meaningful activities you’re passionate about, especially those that contribute to making a difference in society. Highlight your work or volunteering experiences in your application to show a well-rounded profile.
- Believe in yourself – take the time to clearly articulate how your skills and personal experiences are directly relevant to the course you’re applying for. Give it your very best and let your passion shine through!

The global Imperial community
Imperial has an incredibly diverse community. My course mates come from all over the world and their passion for the field and curiosity to learn more is inspiring. Lectures are always engaging, with thought-provoking questions and discussions that push you to think critically.
It’s not just about studying for grades here – it’s about applying what we learn to make a meaningful impact.
What I really appreciate about Imperial is the chance to meet not only students but also leading experts. For example, I had the opportunity to attend a seminar with guest speaker, Neil Hirst, a former director at the International Energy Agency. Speaking with someone of his calibre and hearing his insights firsthand was both humbling and motivating. This mix of diverse perspectives and access to thought leaders makes Imperial a truly unique place to be.
Beyond academics, I’ve also embraced the social side of Imperial. I attended my first knitting session with KnitSock, which was a fun and refreshing way to unwind. Despite the busy schedules, Imperial offers a strong sense of community, providing plenty of opportunities for students to engage in societies, competitions, and career fairs.
Student life in London
Moving to London from Singapore wasn’t too big of a change as both cities share similarities, like the morning peak-hour train rides. However, what truly sets London apart is its community of diverse nationalities, languages and perspectives. I love how people here confidently share their ideas and are genuinely passionate about creating change and supporting one another.
One incredible joy has been exploring the supermarkets. The variety of fruits, coffee beans and cheeses available everywhere is fascinating. I’ve had so much fun experimenting with new flavours and discovering unique treats. London has been a wonderful blend of familiarity and excitement, making it an enriching place to live and learn.
My favourite experience of living in London so far has to be exploring the variety of museums. I’m a great fan of the V&A Museum, where I remain awed by the exhibition displays even after multiple visits. Also, having random, casual chats with people here – whether on the Tube or in a lift – truly defines London’s vibrant city life.
If you’re thinking about moving abroad for university, my advice is to push yourself beyond your comfort zone. Relocating to a new city such as London presents an opportunity for personal development, which may involve shedding certain habits or perspectives to make room for new viewpoints and mindsets.
Be courageous, have faith in your passions, and keep focusing on your goals – you are capable of more than you might think.
Don’t worry – you'll be amazed at how swiftly an unfamiliar country can begin to feel like your own!
