Neo
MSc Advanced Aeronautical Engineering
I have benefited from receiving a full tuition scholarship from the Department of Aeronautics, which is a huge privilege for me to be able to study at Imperial College London.

Determined to deepen his knowledge and expertise of aerospace engineering as a licensed pilot, Neo applied to study MSc Advanced Aeronautical Engineering at Imperial College London. He shares more about his experiences, from choosing a course that would help him excel in his career to settling into student life by connecting with like-minded individuals. Neo is an aeronautics enthusiast who has made the most of what Imperial has to offer.
As a Commercial Pilot License holder with an A320 Type Rating, I was always eager to further develop my engineering knowledge in the aviation and space industries. Knowing how to operate an aircraft is very different to understanding aircraft design, optimisation problems, trade-off analysis and managing projects.
At a world-renowned institution like Imperial College London, I knew I would have the chance to gain specialist knowledge and become better at being both a pilot and an engineer. Having the opportunity to access state-of-the-art facilities and excellent teaching really stood out to me.
Although I didn’t attend an open day or any online information sessions, I was able to learn more about Imperial through friends who were previously studying here. They gave me the opportunity to see the campus and gain an insight into the student experience and how the institution operates.

Settling into campus life
Getting familiar with the campus was extremely easy through maps and help from very kind staff. The Imperial campus is a very friendly environment with many different options for food, study spaces and social spaces. Having a variation of spaces available is important to me as some periods during the academic year are more demanding in terms of studying and other times you have more flexibility and opportunities to socialise with fellow students. Knowing I have different places on campus that I could go to at these different times of year is really great.
With Imperial having so many different sport societies to choose from I joined the Padel Sports Society. Padel is not a well-known sport, but I have been playing back home for the past two years and it was a nice activity to have every week and play with other students as well as get to know them. Padel is a racket sport that is always played in doubles which makes it fun and exciting when playing alongside a friend or meeting someone new.
Scholarships at Imperial
I have benefited from receiving a full tuition scholarship from the Department of Aeronautics which is a huge privilege for me to study at Imperial College London under such circumstances.
The scholarship was offered to me by the Department of Aeronautics because of my previous academic success. This was also very helpful on the financial side of things proving that students who are not financially able to attend institutions but are very successful in academia are given the chance to study at Imperial and have a very bright future.

Being a student of aeronautics
My course offers a wide variety of independent projects that are not only beneficial to my final grade, but also involve topics that would greatly impact the community of aeronautical research. The most challenging part of this course is organising my time around the heavy workload for all the different modules. To get around this, I organised my time so that I would work on weekdays and only do minimal work over the weekends to give myself the time to recover through socialising and doing different activities around London.
Since I am a postgraduate student, my course is very specific on one subject. With a plethora of electives to choose from I chose to learn more about upcoming hot topics through modules like AI for Aeronautical Engineers and Advanced Propulsion, where there is a lot of research and development in those areas currently pushing the boundaries of what is possible. Furthermore, my thesis involves research on how to improve the efficiency of orbit propagation calculations in satellites that would have a huge impact on certain space missions.

Laying foundations for the future
After graduating I plan to work in the aviation industry to apply what I've learned and refine my expertise as an engineer while attempting to find a test pilot academy that combines engineering skills with pilot skills.
I told myself that I wanted to attend an institution that not only has the best resources to capitalise on as a student like teaching staff, industrial talks, books and literature, but also has a community of students that are like-minded in what they want to achieve both academically, professionally and socially.
