Oluwafemi

MSc Advanced Materials Science and Engineering

As a first-generation university student, I am determined to pursue my PhD at Imperial too and become the first professor in my family.

Oluwafemi is passionate about materials science. He joined Imperial and came to the UK as an international student to further his knowledge and specialise in advanced materials science and engineering.

Even though I was born into a family that is not financially privileged, I’ve always had a desire to attend a highly-ranked university. Many of my friends believed it was not achievable, given how competitive it is, but I kept on believing that one day I would become a student there, and look where I am now!

As someone passionate about research, I placed great emphasis on the quality of research output in a university and Imperial stood out as one of the best. The multidisciplinary courses and specialised advanced materials science curriculum offered by the Department of Material Science further solidified my decision to apply.

Scholarships at Imperial

Considering my financial background, I knew it was only possible for me to study at Imperial if I had a fully-funded scholarship. Thanks to the scholarship search tool on Imperial’s website, I could find and apply for scholarships relevant to me and was awarded the Commonwealth Shared Scholarship.

As a first-generation university student, this scholarship has played an important role in supporting my academic journey at Imperial. I don't have the burden of financial concerns, which has allowed me to delve into advanced studies in materials science and engineering with access to resources, materials and experiences that I wouldn’t otherwise have.

The scholarship has supported me to have an enriching and full education and empowered me to engage fully in my research endeavours.

From Master's to PhD

I initially thought I was going to only study for my MSc from Imperial and then proceed to the USA for my PhD, but during my first term, the great academic experience I had at Imperial drove me to apply for a Departmental Scholarship, which would allow me to continue in a PhD within the Department of Materials and cover my tuition fees and stipends. Fortunately, I was awarded the scholarship!

As a research enthusiast, besides receiving the departmental scholarship, I also secured another two PhD offers. But at this point, I know Imperial is the right place for me to continue my studies, so I have decided to pursue my PhD at Imperial.

Living in London as an international student

Imperial's location in London was also a big factor in my decision to do a Master’s here. Living in London as an international student has been an incredibly enriching experience for me. The city's diverse culture, vibrant atmosphere and endless opportunities for personal and professional growth make it an exciting place to live and study.

It’s often said that if you are seeking a life-changing opportunity, London is the place to be – and I agree!

One of my favourite things about doing my Master's at Imperial in London is that you’re in the heart of a city that offers rich opportunities and great experiences even beyond the campus. I have access to world-class academic resources and the chance to collaborate with leading experts in the field of materials, while also getting to explore iconic landmarks, museums and parks, immersing myself in the city’s rich history and culture. London is indeed beautiful!

For someone looking to move to London to study at Imperial, I believe it’s essential to plan ahead when it comes to things like accommodation and budgeting as it will make the transition as smooth as possible. My scholarship helped me with managing the cost of living in London, which allowed me to focus on my studies without worrying about finances. I also found Imperial’s Living Costs webpage useful when planning my budget as it helped me understand the average costs of things such as accommodation, food and transport.

Summing up my experience at Imperial in one sentence, I would say it has been a transformative journey of academic excellence, personal growth and unforgettable experiences that have shaped me into a confident and ambitious individual ready to tackle any challenge.

For anyone considering applying to Imperial, I would advise them to embrace every opportunity for learning and personal growth, actively seek support and guidance from mentors and peers, and immerse yourself fully in the vibrant and diverse community that Imperial offers. The Imperial environment undoubtedly fosters a rewarding and successful academic and personal journey. Do not let anyone diminish your worth – you too can be part of a world-class institution.

Studying at Imperial is definitely impacting me positively. I know that everything and everyone coming out of the university is extraordinary, and it motivates me to be the same and strive for excellence. I give 100 per cent in everything I do because I am expected and supported to achieve beyond the ordinary.

I eagerly anticipate what the future holds for me.

I am determined to make Imperial College London proud.
