The GTA Programme is accredited by the Higher Education Academy (HEA), enabling students who have completed the two Core courses and have sufficient experience to apply for Associate Fellow of the HEA, a professional recognition of their teaching.

This course presents the new HEA’s Professional Standards Framework (PSF2023) which outlines the Areas of activity, Core knowledge and Professional values that should be demonstrated by those who are teaching in higher education and that need to be evidenced in the application.

In this session, we will review Descriptor 1: Associate Fellowship (AFHEA) application requirements for GTA participants. A key element of this process is the opportunity for applicants to reflect on their practice, review some examples of reflective writing and to consider how to start writing in their own application.

Students needing further support to complete their application can also attend the GTA Retreat, which offers quiet writing time, and/or can request a one-to-one meeting.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Describe how your teaching context relates to Descriptor 1 of the new Professional Standards Framework (PSF2023).
  • Identify potential examples to evidence your teaching practice against the dimensions of the PSF2023.
  • Distinguish between descriptive and reflective writing.
  • Begin planning your application for Associate Fellowship (AFHEA).
