With increasing recognition of public engagement as a route to research impact, engaging non-specialist audiences is a core skill for doctoral students to develop and practice. This session provides a broad foundation for those looking to expand their understanding and to get involved in public engagement before attending other Engagement Masterclasses. No previous public engagement experience is required.

In this interactive session, run by Imperial’s Public Engagement Team, you will learn how to effectively plan and evaluate public engagement activities that are meaningful, beneficial and impactful for you, your audience and your research. Through individual and group activities you will reflect on your motivations for working with public audiences, discuss a range of approaches and consider the wider context and drivers for engagement within higher education. You will explore practical steps, tools and frameworks to plan and evaluate engagement using effective and creative methods that your participants enjoy!

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this session you will be able to:

  • Recognise the relevance and drivers for public engagement within higher education
  • Describe the value of public engagement for personal and professional development
  • Recognise the principles of high-quality public engagement
  • Plan engagement activities using appropriate tools and methods
  • Identify why, when and how to evaluate engagement activities

Please note:

  • This session combines content from previous GS Courses ‘Introduction to Engaging the Public’ and ‘Planning and Evaluating Engagement’.
  • The Core Engagement Masterclass is usually run sequentially with the Communication in Engagement Masterclass, so participants have the opportunity to complete both over one day.
  • Further information about other Engagement Masterclasses.
