Motivations and Frustrations
Motivations
Charlie completed a BEng in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Manchester and is hoping to focus more on this subject in their master’s. They enjoy the academic nature of mechanics and think that to really have an impact on the engine building industry, they’ll need to do a PhD. Charlie is hoping that the move to Imperial will open up more research opportunities and give them the chance for further study.
Frustrations
Charlie is worried about moving to London away from their support network and having to find new friends. Academically they are concerned that having a year away from the workshop due to health issues will have had an impact on their practical skills. They are also aware that most big engine manufacturers do not have bases in London so while this will be a good chance to build up academic networks, will it harm their chances to developing industry related networks?
Charlie's AA
Charlie uses Attributes and Aspirations for Engineering the sections in bold refer to the units they take.
While studying Charlie is also thinking about the future and in AA3 for ENG – About Imperial College they visit the Careers Service and attend the Engineering and Science careers fair to help make a decision between moving into an industry role or continuing to study for a PhD. In AA4 – Making the Most of your Master’s they look at how LinkedIn might be able to support them with this.
In CVA4 for ENG CVs Charlie is considering different roles and is looking at how recruiters read a CV. They write a General CV and a Research CV and make several applications to both industry and PhD programmes. In CVA7 for ENG – Personal Statements they write a personal statement for a PhD at Imperial and explore the language used to show their motivation for the subject. In CP4 for ENG – Making Career Decisions Charlie is offered a job at Contech Consulting as an automotive engineer and a PhD to continue with the research they have undertaken at master’s level. They look at strategies for exploring their options by using their network and asking for further details. They also look at appropriate communication with different parties involved in the process.
Away from their studies Charlie is a new member of Racing Green and in WWO1 for ENG – Working with Others they explore how they are an effective follower. Part of effective teamwork is being able to set boundaries and in WWO3 for ENG – Saying No Charlie discovers the different ways of saying no and how they are used in different situations. The unit also explores how people may feel when being told no.
While writing up project work Charlie uses Strict Workflow to help increase concentration they learnt about this and other productivity tools in EE5 for MED – Practical Tools and now make use of the Inclusive Technology webpages at Imperial.
