Motivations and Frustrations

Motivations

Rumi enjoys studying biomedical science and thinks that a master’s will be good for her career. She isn’t too sure what that career is at the moment but she knows she enjoys writing and would like to explore how she could combine science and writing in a career. She likes Imperial and is excited to be a master’s student here.

Frustrations

Rumi is frustrated at herself for not accessing support earlier to help her identify her goals. She had hoped to be able to continue at Imperial in a similar way that she had done her undergraduate study but is finding it tricky to fit all of her extracurricular activities into her busy lab-based programme. She is also a little frustrated that some of her BSc friends are now out working, earning money and have more time to socialise.

AA Journey

Rumi uses Attributes and Aspirations the sections in bold refer to the units she takes.

In AA5 for MED – Working Online Rumi is leading part of a small team at Felix (the Student Newspaper) to create a short video. In this unit she explores strategies for making online group work more efficient. In AA7 for PG – Reflection she then uses her experiences as a volunteer at Felix to learn more about reflective writing.

While studying Rumi is also thinking about the future and in AA3 for MED – About Imperial College she visits the Careers Service and attends the Life and Health Sciences careers fair to help her decide if she wants to move into a PhD or an industry job. She then completes a skills audit in IAS2 for MED – Your Skills and Values where she selects a set of skills, she believes she can demonstrate and works on evidencing them for her CV. For example, she can use her customer service role at John Lewis to evidence communication, commercial awareness, and time-management.

Rumi sees a science communication role advertised and in CVA3 for MED – Application Language she visits the Careers Service and they look at how this role would fit with her current experience and her future goals. In CVA4 for MED CVs Rumi starts to work on her CV and discovers the idea of a database CV. By identifying the similarities between different types of CV and what needs to be different she is able to write three for different types of role. These are linked in her bio above.

She decides to apply for the role at FrontLine Genomics and in CVA6 for MED – Cover Letters she researches who she could ask for more information and then uses that information to write a cover letter (linked above). This unit explores how to write an effective cover letter by addressing your motivations and values and how they relate to the company you are applying to.

Rumi is invited to an interview at FrontLine Genomics and in INT1 for ALL – Preparing for an Interview she explores what she needs to do to prepare. This includes adding evidence to her skills audit to create a bank of answers to use in interviews. You can see her evidence by clicking in the link in her bio above.

In CP4 for MED – Making Career Decisions Rumi is offered the job at Frontline Genomics and a funded PhD to continue with the research she has undertaken for her master’s. She looks at strategies for exploring her options by using her network and asking for further details. She also looks at appropriate communication with different parties involved in the process.

Once she has started work at FrontLine Genomics Rumi shares the things she does in an average weekday. In EE1 for MED – Managing Your Time she looks at how much time she can/should spend on different aspects of her life and in EE3 for MED – Organisation and Prioritisation she uses the Eisenhower priorities matrix to help her fit in a last-minute freelance job. Finally, EE5 for MED – Practical Tools explores how Rumi uses Outlook to manage her work at Frontline Genomics, her freelance work and her personal emails.
