Modelling the interdependence of civil infrastructure systems and analysing their behaviour under conditions of cascading failure

Started: October 2014

Description of Research

This research will develop methods for the mathematical modelling of interdependent urban infrastructure networks, such as transport, energy or communication systems. The aim is to understand how a city's lifeline infrastructure systems behave under stress arising from natural and man-made disasters, for example flooding. A network-of-networks approach is being used to develop quantitative assessment of the risk of cascading failure across system boundaries.
