Daisy, MRes EEC, 2023-2024
I acquired a broad set of skills through two distinct projects. I developed a multidimensional trait-based approach to understand functional diversity change among butterflies. Then I used bioacoustics to investigate how bird biodiversity varies across urban green spaces, enhancing my interest in urban ecology. My supervisor’s lab group provided a rich source of novel ideas and insights.
Silwood offered a supportive, fun, and intellectually stimulating environment, with like-minded students and academics creating an enjoyable and collaborative atmosphere.
Eimear, MSc Ecology, Evolution and Conservation, 2023-2024
I made many amazing friendships and memories here. I enjoyed the range of modules we explored, along with the independence we were granted in both our assessments and projects. My project focussed on how biodiversity changes as rewilding progresses and it allowed me to develop both personally and academically.
By conducting both field and desk-based work, engaging with project managers to organise field work and taking part in lab meetings, I strengthened my organisational and interpersonal skills which will undoubtedly be invaluable as I move forward in my career.

Feihui - EEC MSc course, 2023-24
I learned the frontiers of ecology and conservation as well as skills in data science on this peaceful and beautiful campus. I also had the opportunity to work on my project on a farm in Devon, researching parasites in cattle.
My supervisor has been supportive of my study and my project throughout the year. Apart from the academic resources, I met great friends at Silwood too, enjoying games night, pub quizzes, and various parties and other activities on campus. It’s been an amazing and unforgettable year for me!
Isobel - MSc in Ecology, Evolution & Conservation, 2023-24
I loved the breadth of taught material. My UG degree was in Biochemistry but I was able to catch up on foundations of ecology through the lecture courses. I particularly enjoyed the practicals - it’s rare to get so much time with professors in small groups. My fieldwork was monitoring a rare bird species using bioacoustic monitors and my supervisor, Cristina Banks-Leite, was so friendly and helpful.
It was amazing to use state of the art ecological techniques to study bird conservation! Living at Silwood was a huge highlight of my time - I love the nature on campus and the close community.

Ning, MSc EEC, 2023-2024
My course integrated ecology, climatology and R techniques, cultivating my academic mind. I gained an understanding of how ecosystems and biomes adapt to climate change, in the biodiverse and gorgeous surrounds of Silwood, where you can stroll in the sunny fields and embrace trees and wildlife.
My project focused on the forest aboveground biomass dynamics field. I learned how the forest carbon cycle works under climate change. I was inspired by the project, my supervisor and the comprehensive facilities and resources. The experience encouraged me to work rigorously on future research.
Tyler - MSc EEC, 2023-2024
I have loved my time at Silwood Park; it has been an incredible experience living in what is practically a nature reserve, with like-minded nature enthusiasts! All the staff are incredibly supportive during both lectures and during the independent research project.
For my project, I conducted a month's field trip camping on Lundy Island (UK), studying house sparrow vocalisations. This allowed me to practice and develop a whole range of ecology skills. I couldn't recommend Silwood enough; my stay here has been life-changing!
