Bus Benchmarking at the Transport Strategy Centre

The Transport Strategy Centre (TSC) facilitates international and North American bus benchmarking through two groups, the International Bus Benchmarking Group (IBBG) and the American Bus Benchmarking Group (ABBG). The IBBG is a consortium for large bus organisation around the world while the ABBG is a consortium for mid-sized bus agencies in North America.

The IBBG and ABBG have been running their benchmarking programmes continuously since 2004 and 2011 respectively and have been managed by the TSC since each group’s inception. Their programmes are based on the benchmarking process of the TSC including the Objectives of Benchmarking and Success Factors for Benchmarking.

The groups are owned and steered by the member organisations and led by the TSC. The TSC manages and facilitates the group, conducts deep research and analysis to understand performance, and disseminates and advises members on best practices.

Each group has recurring work programmes that run on continuous annual cycles. The work programmes include detailed performance comparisons through the Key Performance Indicator (KPI) system and in-depth TSC and member led studies to identify best practices. The members also gather at meetings hosted by the member cities on a rotating basis and continue to stay in contact and share information through the group’s secure website and online discussion forum.

All IBBG and ABBG activities are carried out within a framework of confidentiality. Any information that is released is generally anonymised. No confidential information is allowed to be released to third parties without the expressed permission of the members. All member bus organisations are required to sign and adhere to a confidentiality agreement.
