3D printers can generate particulate and volatile organic compounds (VOC) contamination whilst in operation. The printing materials must be selected so that generation of harmful/toxic VOCs and particulates is minimised. This can be achieved, in part, by selecting printing media that generates less harmful substances during the printing process. The other main consideration is the ventilation and installation requirements of the printer. These can usually be found in the user manual or installation guide. These aspects need to be covered in a risk assessment. If in doubt, please contact safetydept@imperial.ac.uk  to discuss further.
