This module aims to develop an understanding of the different organisational contexts Design Engineers operate in and help students consider the current and future professional landscape, together with preparing effectively to position themselves on a career route that is most relevant and exciting to them. The module requires students to research and analyse organisations, make meaningful external connections, start and grow a professional network, prepare a professional CV with a strong portfolio of their existing work and write an essay that reflects on their investigation of organisations and career trajectory considerations.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module, students will be better able to:
- Identify different types of organisations (e.g. manufacturers, start ups, established businesses, consultancies, R&D labs) and their structures, context, employment models and organisational culture.
- Identify the scope of roles that design engineers could take on in different organisational contexts
- Communicate one's personal brand and achievements effectively in an application package which caters to their target placement/role
- Reflect on how the taught concepts affects one's perception of professional practice in design engineering
- Self-organised learning by participating in relevant talks/workshops and conferences in the area of design engineering
- Evaluate different types of management and leadership styles, and applications relevant to different career pathways
