In this seminar Dr Reshma Rao and Dr Gbemi Oluleye, new Grantham Institute Lecturers, will present their research.
Dr Reshma Rao will describe the fundamental bottlenecks for the scaling up of current electrolyser technologies to the terawatt scale and will present our recent advances in materials engineering to overcome some of these challenges. Hydrogen plays a critical role in the energy transformation to a sustainable future, due to its widespread applications as a fuel for transport, feedstock to chemical industries and a heat source for buildings and industry. Low temperature water electrolysis is an effective way to produce green hydrogen at scale using intermittent renewable energy. However, this technology suffers from significant material challenges. Catalysts that are used in water electrolysers to accelerate the rate of water splitting to hydrogen and oxygen, are subject to highly corrosive environments. Designing Earth abundant materials that are not only highly active but also stable under these conditions is critical for the deployment of these technologies.
Dr Gbemi Oluleye has built a unique research experience and expertise at the interface of engineering, policy and innovation, and economics, which enables her to address the affordability and cost barriers affecting the uptake of clean technologies and fuels especially for decarbonising hard to abate sectors. Her research assesses the impact of interventions in addressing these barriers using optimisation-based decision frameworks under uncertainty. She plans to unpack the concept of Tipping Point in clean technology uptake using use-specific cases in the hard-to-abate sector during the seminar.
