Our mission at the MSk Lab Clinical Trials is to assure excellence, efficiency, and transparency in the design, conduct, analysis, and reporting of clinical trials for the benefit of patients and society.
We collaborate with researchers to design, conduct, analyse, and publish clinical trials and other well-designed studies for musculoskeletal disorders.

Our portfolio of studies includes the following current trials:

Furlong Evolution®

Furlong Evolution® Hip Trail

This is a multicentre clinical trial of CE marked devices, such as the Furlong Evolution® Hip Trial, with centers around the UK.

Gait Analysis of Lower Limb Surgical Patients

In this trial, we are investigating the differences in gait patterns between different kinds of hip and knee arthroplasties.

H1 Hip Resurfacing Arthroplasty

H1 Hip Resurfacing Arthroplasty

The primary objective of this study is to confirm the safety and efficacy of the H1 implant by demonstrating non-inferiority compared to the Birmingham Hip Resurfacing (where revision of the device is deemed a failure). The secondary objective is to demonstrate the superiority of the H1 Implant with its metal-free articulation compared to metal-on-metal hip resurfacing in the absence of metal ion release. The H1 implant is designed and manufactured by Embody Orthopaedics.

Imperial Orthopaedic Score Validation Study

Imperial Orthopaedic Score Validation Study

This is a mixed study design consisting of a qualitative focus group, expert opinion, and a quantitative cohort study. The aims of the research are twofold. Firstly, to develop a robust questionnaire that captures patients’ experiences before and after hip or knee replacement surgery. Secondly, to validate this questionnaire and to ascertain how the new questionnaire compares to similar popular measures such as the Oxford Hip and Knee Score and/or EQ5D.

Walk with Path Feasibility and Product Assessment

Walk with Path Feasibility and Product Assessment

This is an exploratory study to validate and determine the usability of the Path Insight device, a wearable insole that can measure motion and function, in people with osteoarthritis.

Parental Experience of the Paediatric Dysphagia Service

Parental experience of paediatric dysphagia service and analysis of The Swallow Physiology of Infants and Children with Dysphagia

This is a prospective observational study, documenting parental experience of dysphagia in neurotypical children, which will be explored during a focus group part of the study. Dysphagia is a skill-based disorder involving one of the three stages of swallowing.

Bone Imaging Statistical Learning

Bone Imaging Statistical Learning

The aim of this is to develop automated, data-driven software to evaluate a large dataset of medical images from varying populations with different clinical findings to aid in the diagnosis of disorders in joint extremities. Furthermore, it is anticipated that this software model will be used as a learning tool for junior doctors as well as an assisting tool for pre-surgical planning.

Ultrasonic MCL strain monitoring

Ultrasonic MCL strain monitoring

This is a cohort observational study using ultrasound imaging of the medial collateral ligament in the knee to investigate how much the ligament is stretching while the knee is moving and to explore whether the stretching behaviour of the ligament changes from pre to post knee arthroplasty and during the recovery period.

ICan Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) be used as a novel intra-operative monitor of spinal cord function?

ICan Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) be used as a novel intra-operative monitor of spinal cord function?

This is a feasibility/pilot study to study and evaluate the use of Transcranial magnetic stimulation, a non-invasive method, to monitor blood flow to the spinal cord during  complex surgery of the thoracic aorta.

Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) in vascular disease

Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) in vascular disease

This is a feasibility/pilot study to evaluate the ability of near infrared spectroscopy to predict and/or diagnose ischaemic spinal cord injury during thoraco-abdominal aortic aneurysm (TAAA) surgery.
