Dear Colleague,

Today marks the end of term and this academic year. I want to thank you and your colleagues for all that you have contributed.

You can feel rightly proud of our achievements. This week’s QS rankings confirmed Imperial remains the sixth best university in the world and the top in London. This is testament to our brilliant and diverse community, our global outlook, and the spirit of innovation you and your colleagues bring to work every day.

I hope you managed to join me, Amanda Wolthuizen (Chief of Staff and Director of Public Affairs), Robert Kerse (Chief Operating Officer) and Martyn Boutelle (Associate Provost for Estates Planning) at this month’s In conversation with the President event. If you missed it, you can watch a recording online.

We discussed two ways we are building Imperial’s future. First, how we’re using your feedback to build Imperial’s new institutional strategy, which will set our ambition and vision for the coming decades. Second, our plans for developing our campuses and making every part of Imperial a great place to work and study. We will keep you updated as this work develops.

One area of feedback was about the sustainability of our campuses. Sustainability will be the focus of our next In conversation event, on Thursday 13 July from 10.30.

One important development over the summer I would like to share with you now will be the naming of Imperial’s Central Library as the Abdus Salam Library. Throughout his career, the Nobel Prize winning Professor of Theoretical Physics Abdus Salam made a tremendous contribution to Imperial, as well as to the world of physics and science more generally. It is right that we do more to celebrate this legacy.

Further work to recognise other previously under-celebrated individuals is underway. For now, I hope the new Abdus Salam Library inspires many more people in the years to come.

I look forward to discussing these and other developments with you in the months ahead. For now, I hope you are able to plan in a well-deserved break from work over the summer.

Best wishes,
Hugh Brady, President
