This short course will build on pre-existing knowledge of normal growth and development in children, with focus on abnormal growth patterns, disorders of puberty and the development of a practical approach to investigation and management.
Emphasis will be placed on gaining a greater understanding of genetic testing as relates to endocrine and common hormonal conditions. The importance of life course of disease, beginning from neonatal endocrine conditions continuing through childhood to transition to adult services will also be highlighted. You will also explore the evidence and application of technology in diabetes.

- Abnormal growth patterns
- Disorders of Puberty
- Hormonal Disorders - Thyroid disease, Adrenal disorders
- Genetic Endocrine conditions
- Neonatal Endocrinology
- Endocrine health as an Adult & Fertility (to include transitional services)
- Diabetes - genetics & types, management and technology
The course is part of a range of short courses spread throughout the academic year which are available both to students who are enrolled on the MSc Applied Paediatrics and as stand-alone CPD accredited programmes for all healthcare professionals.

Learning outcomes
By the end of the course you will be able to:
- Construct an investigative pathway when presented with a child with a pattern of growth or puberty that is atypical
- Critically apply an investigation and management process including, where appropriate, genetic testing to paediatric hormonal conditions
- Provide a critique of the evidence relating to the monitoring, technology and interventions (including education) surrounding diabetes and endocrine disorders
Course structure
The course runs online over 5 consecutive weeks, and you are expected to conduct approximately 7 to 10 hours of self-directed study per week, depending on your pace of learning. This consists of weekly directed tasks that you can undertake at your own pace and timing, such as watching recorded lectures, assigned reading or reflection and forum work, but also may consist of group work online. There are also planned synchronous sessions during the course to discuss ideas, present group and individual work and to facilitate further learning.
Short course students will not be formally assessed on the course however, you will receive feedback for any submitted activities such as participation and contribution to group work and interactive sessions including a workshop within the course.
Evidence of sufficient participation will be required to obtain a course certificate.
