Deep sea soundings notebook, 1857, 41 folios, 33.5 cm
|
|
The first object of the summer voyage, in 1857, of HMS 'Cyclops', a screw steamer of 1250 tons, under the command of Lieutenant Joseph Dayman, was to find the shortest and most convenient route for laying the Electric Telegraph Cable. At the same time however specimens of deep sea soundings, etc, were collected, following instructions for the preservation which Huxley, at the request of the Admiralty, had given the ship's surgeon, Dr Gimlette. Dayman reported on the results of the voyage in 'Deep sea soundings in the North Atlantic Ocean between Ireland and Newfoundland made in HMS 'Cyclops' in June and July 1857', published by the Admiralty in 1858. This included an appendix where Huxley gave details of his instructions on the preservation of the specimens, and brief comments on their character. Murchison alluded to Huxley's part in the work in the Report on the Geological Survey in the 5th report of the Department of Science and Art, 1858. In August 1857 the 'Cyclops' led the fleet of ships known as the 'Wire Squadron' in the first unsuccessful attempt to lay the transatlantic cable. This voyage is described in the biography of Sir Charles Tilston Bright, by E B and C B Bright, volume 1, page 173 onwards. Dayman's account includes lists of soundings taken during this second voyage, after the parting of the cable. Contents: 1 Notes on specimens of Globigerina [Huxley stated that 85 per cent of the soundings were of this genus], instruction of preservation of specimens from the towing net, etc. See Appendix A to Dayman's report 7 Letter from John WASHINGTON, Hydrographer, 9 June 1857, Admiralty. Asks that instructions about the examination of specimens from the Atlantic sea bed should be sent to Dr Gimlette; sends specimens from the Mediterranean collected by Captain Mansell 9 From the same to Sir Roderick Murchison, LS, 12 June 1857, Admiralty. Sends papers by various naval officers on deep sea soundings, to be given to Huxley 10 The same to the same, LS, 5 August 1857, Admiralty. Sends specimens and reports from Captains Mansell and Spratt for Huxley to see 11 From A B BECHER, for the Hydrographer, to the same, 20 August 1857. Is sending specimens from the Atlantic sea bed obtained by Captain Dayman 12 Notes on dredging, 10 October 14 From A B BECHER, to the same, LS, 26 August 1857, Hydrographic Office, Admiralty. Note stating that the specimens from Lieutenant Dayman have been despatched to Huxley 15 The same to the same, LS, 3 September 1857, Hydrographic Office. Encloses the examination of soundings by Dr Gimlette 16 From John WASHINGTON to the same, 26 September 1857, St Servan, St Malo [France]. Asks if Murchison has any suggestions for soundings during the future voyage of the 'Cyclops' in the Red Sea 18 Letter from Sir Roderick MURCHISON to Huxley, 30 September 1857. Encloses the above letter and the results of the soundings of the 'Cyclops' and of Captain Spratt 20 Tables of temperature, density of sea water, soundings and observations on specimens taken at various depths in the Atlantic on board the 'Cyclops' during June and July 1857, by Hart Gimlette, MD 23 Report of deep soundings in the Mediterranean sea, east of Malta, by Captain T Spratt. Printed for the Hydrographic Office, Admiralty, July 1857. 23 pages 36 Notes on Globigerina [They appear to belong in the same sequence as folios 1 and 2, above] 38 Extract from the quotation from Hooker on 'Diatomaceae in the South Polar Ocean' in The Collected Essays of Thomas Henry Huxley, volume VIII, XXXX, Expedition of the Challenger, page 75 40 Extracts from Huxley's article 'On some organisms living at great depths in the North Atlantic Ocean', Quarterly Journal of Microscopical Science, volume VIII, 1868
