Deep sea soundings notebook, 1857, 41 folios, 33.5 cm

The first object of the summer voyage, in 1857, of HMS 'Cyclops', a screw steamer of 1250 tons, under the command of Lieutenant Joseph Dayman, was to find the shortest and most convenient route for laying the Electric Telegraph Cable. At the same time however specimens of deep sea soundings, etc, were collected, following instructions for the preservation which Huxley, at the request of the Admiralty, had given the ship's surgeon, Dr Gimlette. Dayman reported on the results of the voyage in 'Deep sea soundings in the North Atlantic Ocean between Ireland and Newfoundland made in HMS 'Cyclops' in June and July 1857', published by the Admiralty in 1858. This included an appendix where Huxley gave details of his instructions on the preservation of the specimens, and brief comments on their character. Murchison alluded to Huxley's part in the work in the Report on the Geological Survey in the 5th report of the Department of Science and Art, 1858.

In August 1857 the 'Cyclops' led the fleet of ships known as the 'Wire Squadron' in the first unsuccessful attempt to lay the transatlantic cable. This voyage is described in the biography of Sir Charles Tilston Bright, by E B and C B Bright, volume 1, page 173 onwards. Dayman's account includes lists of soundings taken during this second voyage, after the parting of the cable. Contents:

1 Notes on specimens of Globigerina [Huxley stated that 85 per cent of the soundings
were of this genus], instruction of preservation of specimens from the towing net, etc.
See Appendix A to Dayman's report
