Full wavefield seismic tomography - Iterative forward modelling, in 3D

, 69th European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers Conference and Exhibition 2007: Securing The Future. Incorporating SPE EUROPEC 2007, Vol: 2, Pages: 888-892

We have developed an efficient iterative solver for the 3D, two-way, acoustic wave equation, and demonstrate its use for 3D wavefield tomography on a synthetic seismic model. Using composite shots for the tomography, the method is sufficiently fast that it can be used to image realistic-sized field datasets.

3D frequency domain waveform inversion - Synthetic shallow channel example

, 69th European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers Conference and Exhibition 2007: Securing The Future. Incorporating SPE EUROPEC 2007, Vol: 2, Pages: 893-897

We are presenting a first example of 3D frequency domain acoustic inversion applied to a synthetics data over a shallow channel. High resolution images are obtained in less than a day CPU time using inexpensive hardware by utilizing a point iterative solver for wave equation modelling part of the code and multi shot approach. Tests have shown that it is possible to combine multiple shot positions and reduce time required for computation dramatically. Final recovered velocities are within 4% of the true velocity once and spatial positioning I quite well. We did not use any apriori information on anomaly position nor size.

Numerical modeling of tides in the late Pennsylvanian Midcontinent seaway of North America with implications for hydrography and sedimentation

, JOURNAL OF SEDIMENTARY RESEARCH, Vol: 77, Pages: 843-865, ISSN: 1527-1404

A novel numerical model (the Imperial College Ocean Model, ICOM) is used to simulate tidal circulation in shallow epicontinental seas connected to large, open oceans. ICOM is validated using the present-day North Sea and applied to predict tidal range in the late Pennsylvanian Midcontinent Seaway (LPMS) of North America. The model simulates the effect of the principal tidal constituents (astronomical tides) as well as the tide propagating from the adjacent open ocean (co- oscillating tide). Two ‘‘base-case’’ Pennsylvanian paleogeographies were tested: (1) a maximum sea-level highstand and (2) the early stages of a transgression. Sensitivity tests determined the importance of paleo-water depth and coastline uncertainty on the prediction of tidal range. During the highstand, tidal ranges in the craton interior (Midcontinent Shelf, Illinois and Appalachian basins) are consistently predicted as microtidal (, 2 m tidal range). Such low tidal ranges would have inhibited water-body mixing in the LPMS, promoting stratification. This, combined with the influx of oxygen-poor water from the Permian Basin to the west and high organic input from tropical rivers, may have contributed to the deposition of ‘‘core’’ black shales in LPMS cyclothems. Conversely, a mesotidal to macrotidal diurnal (once-daily tide) regime is predicted for the early transgression in a large-scale embayment in eastern Kansas due to resonant amplification of diurnal tidal constituents. Pennsylvanian strata here have been ascribed to a mesotidal to macrotidal setting and include cyclic rhythmites that suggest a strongly diurnal system, as predicted by ICOM.

The symmetry and stability of unstructured mesh C-grid shallow water models under the influence of Coriolis

    , Ocean Modelling, Vol: 16, Pages: 47-60, ISSN: 1463-5003

The symmetry and stability properties of two unstructured C-grid discretisations of the shallow water equations are discussed. We establish that a scheme in which the circumcentres of the mesh triangles are used as the surface elevation points has advantageous symmetry properties and derive a Coriolis discretisation which preserves these properties. It is shown that the resulting scheme is conservative in a discretised energy norm. We then establish that schemes in which the water surface elevations are stored at the mesh triangle centroids do not share these advantageous symmetry properties. Finally we show examples which demonstrate that the centroid based scheme is subject to unstable growing modes, particularly in long timescale, Coriolis dominated problems; while the energy conservative circurricentre based scheme suffers from no such limitation. We conclude that unstructured C-grid methods using the triangle circumcentres and the conservative Coriolis scheme derived here therefore have advantages for this sort of problem over those schemes based on centroids.
