Work placements and internships
Work placements and internships, particularly during the summer have been taken up by several students in the past. They offer the opportunity to gain experience in an industry you may hope to enter in the future and to broaden your horizons. They also provide an important foothold and help build a web of contacts which can prove useful for both future employment and current PhD studies. Placements are also available as a route into other sectors, such as Banking and Finance.
There are two main ways of gaining placements:
- Many companies offer summer placements as part of their recruitment process. These are largely designed for undergraduates but there is no reason a postgraduate cannot apply.
- It is often worth writing directly to contacts within companies and asking if they have any projects you could tackle.
