A Fireside Chat with Rhammel Afflick

About this event

Hosted jointly by Imperial 600, Imperial As One, and the Equality Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Centre at Imperial College London, we’ll be hosting an intimate and interactive conversation with communications expert and LGBTQ+ rights advocate Rhammel Afflick.

The conversation of this lunch-time event will focus on the following topics:

Rhammel’s Story and Identity: His lived experience, his professional and community engagement activities, and how this has positioned him as an expert in the equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) space.

A Shift to a Communities Focus: Understanding the richness and diversity within the BAME and LGBTQ+ Communities, and how taking a ‘communities approach’ helps recognise the differences within these groups, but it also helps better navigate the intersecting identities related to diversity and inclusion programmes.

Getting Uncomfortable: Why it’s sometimes necessary to push the envelope when tackling continuing disparities in access to opportunities and resources, at a time when Western society seems to have made big advances on the inclusion front.

The Importance of Global Pride Celebrations: Why is it still important to celebrate Pride, and why do we see more targeted versions of Pride celebrations like UK Black Pride for example? How do national vs. more city-based organisations need to coordinate in the organisation of Pride celebrations.

Historically, global Pride celebrations have taken place in the month of June and while the ongoing global pandemic makes it difficult to bring large groups of people together at the current time, the staff and postgraduate student networks of Imperial College – together with the EDI Centre at the university, is organising this event to kick off Pride-related, online programming in June 2021.
