Gereon Ebeling, iBSc Immunity & Infection
Why did you chose the Bsc Immunity & infection?
I chose the iBSc in Immunity and Infection because of my profound interest in understanding the complexities of our immune system, its critical role in combating diseases, and the advancing role immunology plays in medicine. The program at Imperial College London stood out due to its strong emphasis on cutting-edge research and the opportunity to learn from renowned experts in the field.
What did you enjoy most about the course?
The course encompassed a series of engaging and informative lectures that significantly enhanced our understanding of immunology. This foundational knowledge was then supplemented by a research project conducted in a lab of our choosing, allowing us to engage in a variety of scientific endeavors ranging from in vitro and in vivo experiments to comprehensive literature reviews. This experience was particularly enriching as it provided me with the invaluable opportunity to continue my research during the summer, further solidifying my practical skills and scientific acumen. Additionally, the course's emphasis on developing proficiency in reading and writing scientific papers has proven to be pivotal, equipping us with essential skills for both conducting research and practicing evidence-based medicine in our future careers.
What you are doing now, and how have you used what you learned on the BSc I&I since completing the course?
I am currently a medical student, and the skills and insights I gained from the Immunity and Infection program have been incredibly beneficial in shaping my academic pathway. The comprehensive curriculum and research at Imperial provided a robust foundation in both theoretical knowledge and practical skills, both of which have been important during the rest of my medical training.
Inspired by my time at Imperial I am planning to pursue a PhD in Immunology after completion of my medical degree. I believe that a PhD will allow contribution to research in immunology, ultimately leading to improved therapeutic approaches and subsequently patient outcomes. The Immunity and Infection program has been a key part of my journey, and I am eager to build upon this in the future.
Charlie Moore, iBSc Molecular and Translational Haematology
Why did you chose the Bsc Molecular and Translational Haematology?
I chose my course because of the opportunity to engage in research and to learn more about the variety of conditions treated by haematologists as it wasn’t a specialty I had much exposure to before.
What did you enjoy most about the course?
My favourite part of the course was gaining hands on experience in my lab project. I learned so much and trying something new was a lot of fun. I liked being part of a small cohort as well and the opportunity to meet patients while still focusing on the academic side of the course.
Where do you see yourself in five years?
In five years time I will be beginning my specialty training, hopefully with more of an idea of what I want to do than I have now.
