Welcome to Linstead

Congratulations on your admission to Imperial College London and welcome to Linstead Hall! Linstead is part of the Eastside development that opened in 2009, housing 140 students. We are located on the east side of Princes Gardens, very near the South Kensington Campus main entrance. Linstead is also located diagonally across the gardens from Ethos (the main Imperial College sports facility) and near the student union, and is above the Eastside Bar (ground floor of
Eastside near the Linstead main entrance) and in the same block as the Essentials Shop. Many other Imperial College halls are within easy walking distance.

Linstead Hall was named in honour of Sir Patrick Linstead, a prominent English chemist who later became the 7th Rector of Imperial College.

    About Dan

Welcome to Imperial! My name is Dan Balint. I am the warden of Linstead Hall and a Professor in Solid Mechanics in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. I live in the warden's flat on level 5 with my wife Lucy, daughter Cecily (Cece) and son Jesse.

I am from the States; grew up near Detroit, Michigan, attended Michigan State University for my undergraduate studies in Engineering Mechanics, then moved east to Cambridge, Massachusetts for a master's degree in Applied Mathematics and PhD in Engineering Sciences at Harvard, then further east to the original Cambridge for a post-doc in the same field followed by a brief interlude in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania as a consultant and finally to Imperial where I have been for the last 18 years!

Apart from research, teaching and wardening, all of which I enjoy very much, I like photography, anything to do wtih Arsenal, going to art museums, travelling, reading books, listening to music, cooking, baking bread and the pursuit of a good night of sleep. I am here for you, so don't hesitate to get in touch. I wish you a very happy and successful year!

    About Tianxiao

Greetings Linsteadians! A warm welcome to all of you. My name is Tianxiao (He/Him), and my friends would call me T (or Ti, both pronounced as tea). I am your subwarden on the M floor (room M24). I am a Design Engineering PhD student. University work, especially at Imperial, can be very stressful at times but you will get the support from the College and from us. I love both classical and jazz music, and enjoy cooking too. Food is for sharing - that's my motto. And sharing is about caring. I like science fiction and movies, and playing video games. At night, I would prefer peacefulness because that's very important for our mental health - but if you like parties and music gatherings, feel free to organise them as long as you make your neighbours happy too!

    About Sara

Hi! My name is Sara and I am a 3rd year PhD student in the Department of Chemistry over at White City studying small molecule activation by transition metal complexes. I am a proud born and bred South Londoner; I attended King's College London for my undergraduate degree in Chemistry and Imperial for my MRes degree in Catalysis. In my free time, I love to paint (both acrylic and oil), read, visit art exhibitions - Renaissance art in particular (Leonardo Da Vinci and Caravaggio are my two all-time favourites), and go on very long walks in and around London. I'm always up for a chat so feel free to say hi whenever you see me about, I'm excited to meet/get to know all of you in the coming weeks!

    About Fernando

Hey there, welcome to Imperial College! My name is Fernando, and I am originally from Indonesia. I’ve lived in the UK for 10 years now and have spent the better half of it in London! I’m currently doing a PhD in Epidemiology, investigating the various factors that influence COVID-19 severity and Long COVID. Outside of studies, I enjoy socializing through playing badminton and board games. I also enjoy going to the cinemas and theatres, which is always inevitably followed with stuffing my face with a lot of sushi. Don’t hesitate to get in touch if you ever need help or advice, or simply to chat. I look forward to meeting you all!
