Scholarships sub-groups

The purpose of the Targeted Scholarships Sub-Group is:  

• To develop recommendations for a strategic approach to approving and funding targeted scholarships.
• To gather and consider quantitative evidence regarding differing levels of representation at the College within each protected characteristic.
• To gather and consider qualitative evidence about the particular needs and/or disadvantages of potential target groups.
• To consider what alternative support may be available to a potential target group, including but not limited to: existing scholarships and financial support, other proportionate types of support, and the ability of any existing relevant College activities such as Outreach to increase participation.
• To develop proposals for prioritising what package(s) of scholarship support could be provided to undergraduate and postgraduate students with College-level resources, or targeted for future fundraising support from Advancement.
• To follow a timetable agreed by the Committee for reviewing the current context for each protected characteristic, and providing the rationale for this schedule.
• To identify opportunities for targeted scholarships which involve indirect discrimination (for example, widening participation and other residency-based awards) which can be objectively justified in terms of legitimate aims articulated in the College’s Charter, Strategy, and other documents, and/or as encouraged/required by the Office for Students: Recruiting the most outstanding students; Developing a diverse cohort of students; Advancing strategically important partnerships and collaborations; Widening participation, normally among Home undergraduates; Assisting Home students in financial need
• To co-opt members to the sub-group with relevant experience and/or expertise.
• To ensure recommendations are evidence-based and comply with all relevant legislation including the Equality Act 2010.

The purpose of the International Scholarships Sub-Group is to: 

• Develop a methodology for assessing the value to College and alignment with its strategies of international scholarship opportunities that is based on relevant qualitative and quantitative evidence
• Ensure recommendations are evidence-based and comply with all relevant legislation including the Equality Act 2010
• Identify priority areas for international scholarship engagement by assessing risks and opportunities for strategic engagement
• Provide recommendations to the SSSC regarding international scholarship opportunities, along with suggestions of how these could be funded
• Where appropriate, review the College’s existing international scholarships and, based on evidence, advise which of these could be further strengthened or ceased
• Identify opportunities for new international scholarships which can be objectively justified in terms of legitimate aims articulated in the College’s Charter, Strategy, and other documents, and/or as encouraged/required by the Office for Students: Recruiting the most outstanding students; Developing a diverse cohort of students; Advancing strategically important partnerships and collaborations

The International Scholarships Sub-Group shall be composed of the following of representatives from across the College, including:

• At least one representative from each faculty
• International Recruitment Team
• Student Financial Support
• Advancement
• Admissions
• International Relations Office
• Graduate School
