Royal School of Mines (1863 - )
The Royal School of Mines was the ultimate name assigned to an evolving institution that had its genesis in the 1830s. In 1851 the Government School of Mines and Science Applied to the Arts was established. It was the first government backed technical higher education establishment in the United Kingdom. It underwent a change of name in 1863, becoming the Royal School of Mines.
