[This refers to an attempt made by Thomson, Murchison, Whewell, Lyell and others to award the Copley Medal to Professor David Forbes for his alleged discoveries on Glaciers. Huxley was not on the Royal Society Council at the time, and he sent a long letter to Professor E Frankland proving that the priority of discovery claimed by Forbes belonged to Rendu, and that Tyndall's discoveries were independent and contradictory of those of Forbes. Huxley's letter was annotated and confirmed by Professor W Hopkins of Cambridge. After much animosity and discussion, the opposition prevailed, and the Copley Medal was otherwise awarded.
