Letter to T H Huxley from PYE, John (1782-1874), 6 March 1861 - 28 August 1862
Sent from St Mark's Crescent, NW London

These letters are all addressed to Henry Prescott. The letters are very long and highly technical. The compiler of the published catalogue [Dawson] lacks the special knowledge of art and technique which is necessary to interpret and epitomize them. John Pye was a well-known landscape engraver and executed many plates for J M W Turner. Prescott, an etcher, was a friend of Huxley's, and he probably gave these letters to him
[For an interesting account of Pye's association with Turner, see "Notes and Memoranda respecting the Liber Studiorum of J M W Turner, RA, written and collected by the late John Pye". Edited by John Lewis Roget, London: John Van Voorst, 1879]
