“This success was achieved by engaging staff in the process and investing GP
partners, money, ideas and innovation into the practice.” In exploring the many
lessons that can be learned from this example, Dr Ashworth was also quick to
point out that there is no “one size fits all” solution and that a tailored approach is
always more effective.
“There is a lot that can be done to address productivity, including exploring ways
of working more efficiently and putting clinical vision back into commissioning,”
concluded Dr Ashworth.
Professor Derek Bell argued strongly that clinicians must play a vital role in this
challenge as they form the dominant part of the workforce. “If clinicians are not
involved it won’t happen. But it also means they’ve got to step up to the plate,
they need to move out of their silos and work as part of a whole system and it
certainly is about true partnership with management and academics.”
Professor Bell gave a definition of productivity and value as “something that
produces a fair or adequate equivalent or return for money. So if things are being
done that don’t add value then the NHS should stop doing them,” he argued.
“We have access to a lot of patient and performance data, which we can use
to improve; good data can be used to help drive change, bad data should be
questioned to get the right outcomes for patients.”
Summing up the event, one of the alumni organisers, Dr Suraj Bassi said: “The
event brought together a wealth of knowledgeable minds from the healthcare
sector, providing an excellent forum for professionals to come together and share
their experiences. We are all facing similar issues in the sector, and collaborative
working and knowledge sharing will help us to overcome these challenges.”
