T
o showcase the incredible academic research
coming out of the School, in July 2012 we held a
‘Research Celebration’ attended by staff, academics,
research partners and key stakeholders.
“Research output is incredibly important to
the School. It puts us at the cutting-edge of
developments, influencing policy makers and
pioneering change in innovation, finance, industry
and healthcare, to name but a few. It also
provides topical and relevant case studies for our
students, providing them with a unique learning
opportunity”, explains Professor Gann, Deputy
Principal for Research and Business Engagement,
who opened the event.
Some of the most significant areas of research
carried out by the School have included:
DCE is a five-year multi-disciplinary programme,
uniting researchers from the Faculty of Engineering
and the Business School, and partnering with a
wide range of industry leaders. DCE explores ways
to digitally link utilities and services within a city,
enabling new technical and business opportunities
and ultimately transforming the management of
city services and resources.
Our Centre for Hedge Fund Research has carried
out research on hedge funds since 2006. It is
home to one of the most comprehensive hedge
fund databases, which is helping to answer key
questions about hedge fund performance and risk.
Remote care involves the use of information
and communications technology to support the
delivery of health and social care services in
people’s homes. Our research focuses on how
remote care can be sustainably and efficiently
embedded into the care system.
Through a collaborative project with Arup, we have
demonstrated to professional services firms the
value of effectively and systematically analysing
internal skills and expertise, and strategically using
this information to drive competitive advantage.
Our research has significantly affected regulation
of the telecommunications industry, and has
helped regulators, including Ofcom, to understand
the processes involved and develop guidelines for
use by mobile operators.
Our research and expertise in the area of
innovation resulted in a prestigious secondment
to the Department of Business, Innovation and
Skills for Dr Keith Smith, as Head of Innovation and
Policy Analysis. Our knowledge and ideas have
been used in the development of key science,
innovation and technology policies.
Dr Smith’s collaboration with government is
helping to shape the way these policies are
defined, structured and implemented.
