Student support and the Centenary Campaign

StudentNelson Mandela once observed, "Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world." Few parents do not view a good education as one of their greatest hopes for their children.

Imperial College provides a vibrant and challenging environment for its student members and we hold a strong belief that gifted students should never be turned away because they cannot finance their studies here. This sentiment resonates with those who wish to encourage talent and potential in young people and who wish to break down the boundaries for students who feel financially restricted about advancing into higher education or pursuing postgraduate qualifications.

Since 2000 we have raised £7 million towards scholarships for students with the potential to excel. Over the remainder of our Campaign period, we aim to raise an additional £15 million to fund scholarships for undergraduate and postgraduate students across all of the College's departments.

From the alumni and friends who give collectively to the Student Opportunities Fund, to supporters who have had the means and the motivation to fund a named scholarship, money raised in support of our students is a vital part of the College's Centenary campaign.

Find out more about the successes of just some of the talented students who have benefited from a scholarship at Imperial College:

Adam Scholefield was one of the first Student Opportunities Fund scholars to join Imperial in 2003. In October 2007, he graduated with first class honours and is now studying for a PhD at the College.

Gary (Yuangao) Liu was the first recipient of the Lee Family Scholarships. He completed a PhD at the College in 2007 when he was awarded the annual Unwin Prize.

"How does an engineering degree equip you for a career in banking?
While studying at Imperial College, I couldn't understand why we had to work endlessly on a piece of equipment. Now I am at Citigroup, I realise that my time at Imperial taught me all about problem solving. The environment stimulates and challenges students and researchers alike."
