Humankind has undoubtedly changed the landscape in which it lives. From open cast mines to oil fields, city bypasses to country lanes, we have carved patterns onto the surface of the Earth. Anthropocene examines these transformed landscapes in a very 21st century fashion. The artist, David Thomas Smith, builds these photographic artworks using thousands and thousands of thumbnails extracted as screen grabs from Google Maps. These are then reconstructed using Photoshop to create mind-bendingly complex patterns.
The patterns are reminiscent of those found on Persian rugs – a deliberate reminder from the artist that much of the oil we use to help build our world comes from the Middle East.
