50 years of schools outreach at Imperial

Imperial started its first schools outreach programme in 1975 with a local tutoring initiative called the Pimlico Connection. It is believed to be the first such scheme in the UK, and it continues to support pupils to this day.

Over the last 50 years, the College has continued to launch innovative and collaborative schools outreach programmes touching the lives of thousands of young people and the many staff and students who have developed and delivered these activities. Imperial has led the way in establishing specialist facilities for schools outreach on its campuses – the Reach Out Lab in 2010 and Makerspace in 2017 – as well as creating innovative online and interactive programmes to serve young people of all ages in our local community and much further afield.

Outreach@50

The Outreach@50 series celebrates an important milestone and shares the stories of our commitment to outreach and innovative approach, celebrating with our communities and participants, and thanking the many individuals, collaborators and partners who have made this journey possible. As well as looking back, we look ahead at our ambitious plans for outreach in the future.
