Introducing our 2019 scholarship winners

2019 scholarship recipients

Imperial College Business School hosted a Scholarship Winners’ Reception to celebrate the major scholarship winners joining the MBA and MSc programmes in September 2019.

The 34 scholarship students enjoyed networking, drinks and canapes, as well as speeches from Associate Dean Leila Guerra and Executive Director of Marketing, Recruitment, and Admissions Joël McConnell.

Leila began the evening by telling the students about how recipients are chosen.

Over the last week you’ve heard us say to your classmates that you are the best of the best. Tonight, I could say, you’re the best of the best of the best, but I don’t want to do that, because Imperial is a bit different. Our values, our priorities and the way we do things tend to be slightly different. So for our scholarships, we also always try to make sure that when we select candidates, we try to reach that extra mile, and find that extra variety.

MSc scholarship recipients

The scholarships awarded to MSc students included:

  • Brilliant Minds Scholarship
  • Bseisu-Imperial College Business School Scholarship
  • Entrepreneurship Scholarship
  • Future Leaders Scholarship
  • Global Leadership Scholarship
  • Imperial College Scholarship
  • The Lee Family – Imperial College Business School Scholarship
  • Social Impact Scholarship
  • Technology and Innovation Scholarship
  • Women in Finance Scholarship

It’s the second year that the Bseisu-Imperial College Business School Scholarship, for high-achieving students from Palestine, Syria, Lebanon or Jordan, was awarded. This year, it was given to MSc Finance & Accounting student Hoda Elrayes.

“This scholarship means a lot because the Finance programmes here at Imperial are very practical and career orientated, and it’s something I did not have the opportunity to have back home,” said Hoda.

“I come from Gaza, which is a war zone, and we don’t have that level of exposure to international firms, and such career-focused programmes. I feel like my hard work paid off to be on the same level as those who lived in developed countries where financial services are a work opportunity.”

Aksah Khan, Women in Finance scholar and MSc Finance student, agrees, saying receiving the award meant she knew she now had access to a great education. “I would say with Imperial, speaking to alumni and staff, it was really clear the Careers department is phenomenal here - it’s unparalleled compared to other universities and Master’s programmes. For my programme, it is top in London and one of the top in the world, and it’s a completely world-class education.”

2019 Women in Finance scholars

Our new MSc International Management Global Leadership Scholarship is available to applicants demonstrating an outstanding track record of leadership and/or outstanding leadership potential, along with a focused career plan.

Maria Yatsenko was awarded the scholarship and said, “It was incredibly nice to think that amongst all the people that have been chosen, my work has been appreciated.” Maria added that she chose to study MSc International Management at Imperial because ‘it was the best out there’.

“I’ve looked through all different business programmes, and I came to the conclusion that Imperial came first. Obviously, the Business School has the rankings and is renowned for its approach. I thought the MSc International Management programme is very globally orientated which is very important for today’s world.”

Alejandro Nicoli is an MSc Investment & Wealth Management student who received the W L “Bill” Byrnes scholarship, which honours the memory of Bill Byrnes, who played a significant role in the development of Fidelity as an international investment management business.

Alejandro said that there were two words that define how he feels about receiving the award.

"The first word is opportunity. Coming from Venezuela, which is in absolute turmoil, it means I have an opportunity to take as much as I can, not for myself, but to give it to as many people as I can, which is exactly what I want to do.

"The second word is commitment. At the end of the day, when you get a scholarship you feel more committed to the university and most importantly, to yourself. It sounds kind of cliché, but you want to do something not only for yourself but for something bigger than yourself."

Full-Time MBA student Kwaku Koranteng, who received a Future Leaders scholarship, joins the Business School after working at Goldman Sachs and completing a Master’s in the USA.

“Following my Master’s I knew I wanted to go to business school, to gain further understanding in other aspects of business that had nothing to do with finance as that had been my background,” he said.

“I was looking for programmes, and Imperial’s stood out to me because I like the practical approach to the course, which is something I felt was not as emphasised in other programmes. I also liked the fact that there was the ability to leverage the other divisions and departments at Imperial, so you can leverage the technology and science departments as well to build on ideas.”

Dan said that he chose Imperial as it is ‘at the forefront of leveraging science and technology expertise to offer world-class business education to tackle emerging global challenges’.

Meet the Global Online MBA class of September 2019 and January 2020

Global Online MBA class picture

When you think of an online MBA, you think an international classroom, diversity of industries and roles, and a myriad of different experiences. This is exceptionally true of our new Global Online MBA class of September 2019 and January 2020.

In September and January, 139 professionals from all around the world joined us for their Global Online MBA induction week. They spent a week on campus getting acquainted with their classmates for the two-year programme, adjusting back into studying life and enjoying some time in our beautiful South Kensington location.

What does the new Global Online MBA class look like?

Global Online MBA 2019/2020 combined

Truly putting the ‘global’ in Global Online MBA, students in the September 2019 and January 2020 cohorts represent 47 different nationalities. 70% of students join us from outside of the UK and travelled many miles to join us for induction week. We have students living in New Zealand, South Africa, Thailand, Malawi and Belize, to name a few of the many different countries they hail from.

Global Online MBA 2019/2020 combined map

On average, the students bring 10 years’ of work experience to the classroom. That combined with a variety of industry backgrounds, with the majority of students coming from pharma/biotech/healthcare, banking/finance and IT/technology, will stimulate colourful class discussions.

In addition, 30% of the class is female and the average age in the cohort is 34.

Induction week

The Global Online MBA is a primarily online programme, yet it also includes some key classroom learning experiences. One of these is induction week where we formally welcome students onto campus at the beginning of their MBA.

The Academic Director, Markus Perkmann, welcomed the new class. As the former Head of the Innovation & Entrepreneurship Department, Markus brings his wealth of experience in entrepreneurship and startups to the role, which will be a valuable asset to our Global Online MBA students.

Commenting on the new class, Markus said:

The new Global Online MBA class is truly impressive. Having talked to them in the classroom and to many of them informally, I am especially impressed with their ambition to learn and self-improve. The class is also very diverse, both geographically and professionally, providing the opportunity to learn from each other and build new connections that will last for their entire career.

Throughout the week, students had a variety of sessions to ease them onto the MBA, including online learning, returning to study and plagiarism awareness. Due to the global nature of the programme and that the majority of coursework is completed in syndicate groups, there was also an afternoon dedicated to diversity and inclusion on identifying strengths in diverse global virtual teams.

Students also spent a day with our Careers service who deliver the Personal Leadership Journey during the MBA. We describe this module as a ‘journey’ because students will spend time being introspective, examining their career up to joining the MBA and what it might look like beyond. This is a hugely important part of the MBA and their personal growth on the programme.

The week also provided plenty of opportunities to socialise and get to know each other at networking events and group dinners. By the end of the induction weeks, the new classes left the Business School with a whole new group of classmates and comrades, ready to take on the two-year Global Online MBA journey.

Why did you decide to study a Global Online MBA and why Imperial College Business School?

I have been thinking about doing an MBA for quite some time. Despite having a robust academic background, I felt that a solid understanding of financial, accounting and entrepreneurship would be very useful in my current position and open up new career possibilities. I was also interested in the development of my strategic thinking and leadership skills. After research on the different opportunities available, I concluded that an MBA would provide me with all these competencies and add significant value to my professional profile. An online MBA seemed to be the perfect solution as it provides the flexibility I need to combine study, work and family life. My choice of Imperial was determined by its excellent reputation, strong focus on sustainable business and research, as well as its invaluable network of faculty, alumni and students.

What was the best part of induction week?

The induction week has been a fantastic occasion to meet with my cohort. This is particularly important in an online programme where most of the students are based in different locations. In this sense, I loved all the activities that lead us to know each other such as the initial ice-breaker and the video project by each syndicate group. I also very much appreciated the discussions that took place during the lectures we had during the week. Given the wide diversity of educational and professional backgrounds in the class, I found these discussions extremely enriching.

Why did you decide to study a Global Online MBA and why Imperial College Business School?

I believe an MBA education and networking will accelerate my professional growth and enable me to champion innovation with a business pedigree. My professional background has spanned roles as an engineer, a product manager, project manager and programme manager in the energy, government, blockchain/startup, and technology sectors. Building upon such a diverse background, I can leverage an MBA to systematically sharpen my business acumen while keeping me oriented in technology. The reason why I pursued an MBA at Imperial through its Global Online MBA programme is that my career aspirations, as well as profile, match well with the growth opportunity the College offers with its candidate profile as a leader, an innovator and a collaborator.

What skills are you hoping to gain from your MBA?

I hope to gain both academic and interpersonal skills through my MBA. I have gained business knowledge through various professional endeavours, and it will be a great opportunity for me to formalise business learning in a structured way. On the other hand, the academic knowledge I will gain through the MBA will reinforce my performance at work. Furthermore, I'd like to gain skills in communication, facilitation, and motivation when working with professionals in different industries and from a myriad of backgrounds. These skills will definitely pay dividends for my career advancement.

Why did you decide to study a Global Online MBA and why Imperial College Business School?

The decision to enrol in the Global Online MBA programme at Imperial came naturally to me, as two things were paramount to my decision. On one side I had high expectations regarding academic excellence and reputation. Both of these aspects are met to the highest degree at Imperial. On the other hand, I wanted to study a programme which would provide me with the necessary degree of flexibility, so I could combine my demanding work schedule with the rigorous academic agenda I was looking for.

Which aspect of the programme are you most looking forward to?

I am excited to work together with a truly global cohort. Most of my peers are experts in their respective fields and are still actively working during their Global Online MBA studies. The structure of the programme provides the unique opportunity of cutting-edge insights into different industries and companies. Furthermore, the academic discussions benefit immensely from the diverse set of experiences. The strong and broad network of Imperial is another aspect, which is adding to the benefits of the programme. To connect and develop relationships with alumni around the world is something I am truly looking forward to.

Lola Ololade Global Online MBA

Lola Adedokun

Nationality: British/Nigerian
Role: Health Economics, Market Access and Reimbursement Lead at Johnson and Johnson
Location: London

Why did you decide to study a Global Online MBA and why Imperial College Business School?

As a growing leader in my organisation, I recognise that I need to develop my business knowledge and management skills. While I’ve been exposed to these informally, I wanted to study an MBA in order to further develop these skills via formal study. Imperial College is world-renowned and was one of the few institutions I researched while exploring MBA routes. I was pleased to discover that a Global Online MBA was offered as this allows me the flexibility to take the MBA part-time and also remotely. Being based in London, the option to undertake some electives on campus also appealed to me as I would benefit from interacting with my colleagues in person and also be able to utilise the College’s facilities. Really a best of both worlds!

How do you plan to get involved in Imperial life outside of the MBA?

There are several opportunities for networking via the different activities going on in the College. I plan to connect with the Alumni team, to share experiences with professionals who have undertaken the MBA.  I also plan to join a student club, in order to connect with others that have similar interests in science and entrepreneurship. Finally, if I have the capacity, I hope to enrol in an evening language course to up-skill my travel vocabulary.

Aaron Tang

Nationality: Malaysia
Role: Chief Marketing Officer, Burger King Indonesia
Location: Jakarta

Why did you decide to study a Global Online MBA and why Imperial College Business School?

Coming from an engineering background, I have always been keen to learn more on business. Beyond knowledge, an MBA for me is about having access to a lifelong intellectual sounding board that is global, and diverse. The GMBA in itself is true to Imperial’s innovative roots. The programme leverages technology in a way that offers versatility, allowing me to integrate extensive learning around my professional and personal commitments. The School excels in combining science and technology with management and entrepreneurship, enabling innovation, sustainability and intelligence in business. That is the future we all aspire toward, what better way to be equipped for that than to kickstart the decade in the right direction!

What did receiving the Deans Excellence scholarship mean to you?

I am humbled and honoured to be learning from and with the best; to be given a scholarship for that, all the more so. I am determined to maximise learnings and draw invaluable experiences from this programme. Having met the faculty and my cohort, I have no doubt it will be an enriching two-years which will probably go by too quickly. I’m truly grateful for this opportunity, I hope to bring meaningful impact to the roles and businesses I operate in going forward.

Jessica Thilaganathan, Global Online MBA

Jessica Thilaganathan

Nationality: British
Role: Medical Communications Specialist
Location: London

Why did you decide to study a Global Online MBA and why Imperial College Business School?

As a scientist by background, I have worked my way up in the medical communications space to manage teams and large-scale projects, but I lack formal training in marketing, finance or strategy. I decided to do a Global Online MBA for two reasons; primarily because I wanted to engage with a diverse cohort and think about problems from a global to local perspective, as this is a huge challenge for my clients in the pharmaceutical industry and secondly, I needed the flexibility to fit study around a full-time job which involves a lot of travel. Imperial stood out to me because of its reputation in science and technology, as well as the interactive online learning experience and the flexibility to take some modules on campus as a Londoner.

Which aspect of the programme are you most looking forward to?

I am very excited to learn from other industries throughout the programme, through case studies and examples on the course and conversations with my cohort. I am most looking forward to the entrepreneurship and innovation part of the programme. Considering how the use of technology is constantly evolving I’m hoping these modules will push us to evolve our way of thinking. In addition to the electives, I can’t wait to bring all we’ve learnt to life in the Capstone project and hope to make it on one of the Glocal trips to see how the learnings apply in a real-life setting.

Jack Lim, Global Online MBA

Jack Lim

Nationality: Singaporean
Role: Principal International Auditor, Coca-Cola Company
Location: Singapore

Why did you decide to study a Global Online MBA and why Imperial College Business School?

The decision of pursuing an MBA comes naturally as I seek to expand the essential skills and knowledge to propel myself as one of the finance leaders within the company. I am an international traveller and my job requires me to travel all around the globe and having an MBA programme which offers flexibility in tackling the curriculum is crucial. Reputation, learning experience and alumni network are important elements I consider in a business school for me. Imperial offers not only the perfect blend of the above, but the School has also been consistently ranked as one of the best in the world. This will certainly raise my career profile and increase my visibility within the business.

How are you hoping to apply your MBA learnings to your role at The Coca-Cola Company?

One of my aims from this MBA journey is to enable myself to identify and have an in-depth knowledge of the existing relationships between the business theories and strategies used in my company. Therefore, I hope with the exposure at Imperial, I will be able to unravel and appreciate how strategies executed in one business unit could be adopted in others, while considering the challenges of the different macro and micro-economic environments to achieve synergies. I’m also expecting to make use of the analytical and problem skills learnt to identify potential areas in existing processes for improvement and/or to create new processes.

Meet the Full-Time MBA class of 2019-20

Full-Time MBA class of 2019-20

Last week marked a very important milestone for 70 exceptionally bright and motivated professionals – the beginning of their one-year journey on the Full-Time MBA at Imperial College Business School.

After the many hours put into their application, interview and GMAT preparation, meeting us at various events in the UK and internationally, every student in the class was personally selected by us to join this competitive programme.

We are so excited to welcome them to the Business School and to witness these students begin their MBA with us.

What does the new class look like?

At Imperial, we take great pride in our diverse student body. We are firm believers that a diverse classroom stimulates diversity of thought, interesting discussions and learning opportunities for students.

The new Full-Time MBA class of 2019-20 are exceptionally diverse. They represent over 26 nationalities and join us from countries all over the globe. In fact 91% of students come from outside of the UK. The class is also made up of 33% female students.

A truly international bunch, our Full-Time MBA students join us from pockets all over the world

With an average of six years’ work experience, the class come from varied industry backgrounds. The majority come from banking/finance, consulting/professional services, IT/technology/telecoms and pharma/biotech/healthcare.

In terms of degree backgrounds, the highest proportion join us from engineering, followed by business/management, economics and science/medicine. This highlights the draw of the Business School’s connection to STEM as part of Imperial College London.

A busy and exciting induction week

Pursuing an MBA is a huge undertaking, and for many students, they are returning to full-time study after many years in the professional world. The first week of the programme is an induction week, which helps ease students back into studying life, as well as introducing them to the various teams and faculty who will be their support network during the programme.

This is also a time for the students to get to know their syndicate teams and each other in general. On the MBA, strong friendships are made, and it must feel surreal to students that the people in class with them on the first day are their future colleagues and friends for life.

To kick off induction, the Academic Director of the Full-Time MBA, Andreas Eisingerich, offered anecdotes about their forthcoming MBA journey and gave some advice to the students. Here are some of Andreas’ top tips from his welcome speech:

1. Make sure you ask questions

“Here are some very easy wins – listen, pay attention, and ask questions. It’s amazing what people will tell you. This rings true for your friends and colleagues sitting around you, and it also rings true with faculty. Faculty enjoy it when you ask questions. We have faculty who are truly passionate about what they do…these people would love it if you ask questions that are of interest to you.”

2. Be yourself

“Life is too short to pretend that you are someone else, so, be yourself. You made it, you are here! There’s something about you that we loved otherwise you wouldn’t be here in the first place. From day one, just be yourself. Sometimes we have to step outside of our comfort zone and that’s perfectly fine. But as part of this journey, we’re going to have more fun together, and you’re going to get more out of it if you are more yourself.”

3. Utilise your tribe

“Some days of your MBA will be like today – blue skies, white clouds, the birds are chirping, everything runs very smoothly and it’s happy days. And there will be days on the Full-Time MBA that will be wave after wave coming in, that is deadline after deadline. And all I want to say to you is that it’s OK. Life is like that. But the point I want to share with you is you are not alone. Take a good look around this room – this is your tribe. What you are going to get out of this year is up to the individuals in this room and what you make out of it.”

Following his talk, induction was in full swing. Throughout the week students had numerous sessions including pastoral care, library services, personal ethics and core values, as well as workshops on working in teams and unconscious bias training.

Students also spent a full day with our Careers service. Careers will be supporting students throughout the MBA, from one-on-one sessions with their Career Consultants to company visits hosted by our Employer Relations team, so this was an important introduction to set-up at the beginning of the MBA journey.

The week wrapped up with a fun team building day. The class ventured out on an away day to a high ropes course at an outdoor activity centre. Height defying tasks quickly fostered trust, unity and friendships amongst the cohort, and paved the path for comradery and togetherness that will only grow stronger over the year.

“A wonderful experience” Finance Masters’ electives in Dubai and New York City

International elective New York feature

Students on our Finance Master’s programmes* had an amazing opportunity to study one of two international electives – Macroeconomics and Finance for Practitioners in Dubai and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Introduction to Quantitative Investing in New York City.

The electives are designed to teach students theory and be able to apply it to the business context of the country they are visiting. It’s a truly unique experience that broadens their knowledge, aids in their personal development and boosts their CV – international experience is well regarded by employers.

Read on to find out more about the international electives and the students’ experience.

Macroeconomics and Finance for Practitioners

Students travelled to Dubai and the UAE for this elective to develop an understanding of how macroeconomics affects the determination of asset prices. The seven-day trip had a packed itinerary of lectures, company visits, a networking event and multiple cultural activities.

The lectures were held daily in the morning to teach students theory, and in the afternoon they visited companies to see the learnings in practice. The lectures put an emphasis on the monetary and fiscal policy issues arising in an economy like the UAE to help students create links and make the company visits extremely relevant.

Students also visited and had company presentations at the Central Bank of the UAE, the Dubai Islamic Bank, Mubadala, an investment and development company, and Nakheel, the real estate developers behind The Palm. The final presentation was at Citi UAE, where an Imperial MBA alumnus and CEO of the company presented to students.

Finance international trip elective

Owen Li, MSc Investment & Wealth Management student, shares his experience from the elective:

From lectures by Professor Alex Michaelides and presentations by local organisations, I developed a basic understanding of the current macroeconomic situations in the UAE and how they are affected by monetary and fiscal policies. I was also immersed in Arabic culture and had a wonderful experience that I would never have gotten the opportunity to experience otherwise.

Sheikh Zayed Mosque

The trip fully immersed students in the local culture with a fantastic social programme which they enjoyed alongside MSc Management students who were also in Dubai studying the Global Immersion elective. Highlights include a visit to the world’s tallest building, the Burj Khalifa, a cultural lunch at the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding to sample delicious local delights and visiting the striking Sheikh Zayed Mosque.

Shubhra Jain, MSc Finance student, has documented her experience on the international elective in a video diary:

The week finished with a fun day in the desert. Students packed into Land Rovers for a “dune bashing” safari, complete with camel rides, sand surfing and a BBQ at a desert camp. Owen Li captured an incredible shot during the safari which won him the photo competition for the trip.

On his picture, Owen says:

The photo was quickly captured in the moment when I climbed up to the ridge of the sand dune, spotting the view towards the sun. It impressed me that beyond the winding path made by footprints, the bright, alluring and boundless distance could be seen. In addition to the close shot of the path almost looking like it’s leading to the sun, the stereoscopic light, shade of the sand and the people also magnified the vastness of the desert.

Introduction to Quantitative Investing in New York City

What better place to learn about quantitative investing than New York City (NYC), the globally renowned finance centre. Students spent a week in NYC learning about quantitative methods relevant for algorithmic trading through lectures, guest speakers, company visits and experiential learning activities.

The first part of the elective is taught online before students head to NYC, so they are primed on algorithmic trading before reaching the Big Apple. However, students still have lectures during the trip which were hosted at the prestigious Cornell Tech campus, and featured some high profile guest speakers.

The company visits and presentations gave students an insider’s look into the finance industry, as well as the opportunity to see how the algorithmic trading models function in real time.

Finance international elective NYSE

During the week they visited the headquarters of Goldman Sachs, the famous American multinational investment bank and financial services company, as well as the IEX Group, a stock exchange for investors and companies, and OnDeck Capital, a global online company that offers small business loans.

The most memorable visit of the trip took place on Wall Street itself – a look inside the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) with a tour around the iconic building. Joyce Zhao, a student on the MSc Risk Management & Financial Engineering captured a beautiful shot inside the NYSE, winning our photo competition for the trip. She said:

Finance international elective Joyce Zhou

"The NYC elective was intensive but extremely interesting. In that short week, we explored the American culture in many dimensions, visited several well-known firms in the financial district and even completed a group project from scratch. It gave us a comprehensive view of quantitative investing in a practical way and I am really inspired by the company visits."

At the end of the week, students applied all their learnings from the lectures and company visits to create their own financial trading model as part of their assessment, working together in groups.

It was a busy seven days, but students managed to squeeze in time to explore NYC and mingle with the MSc Management students who were also in town for their Global Immersion. A private tour of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, also known as the MET, was an enriching cultural experience that students will remember for years to come.

Joyce comments on her overall experience of the elective:

The NYC elective was intensive but extremely interesting. In that short week, we explored the American culture in many dimensions, visited several well-known firms in the financial district and even completed a group project from scratch. It gave us a comprehensive view of quantitative investing in a practical way and I am really inspired by the company visits.

Students returned from their international trips to continue their studies in London, equipped with new and current knowledge, as well as some lifelong memories.

Two exciting ventures from the Imperial MBA Entrepreneurial Journey module

On the 2019 Entrepreneurial Journey (EJ) module, students across our Full-Time MBA, Executive MBA and Weekend MBA developed a live entrepreneurial project to simulate launching a startup and build entrepreneurial skills.

This team-based startup project sees students taking an idea for a new product or service, developing a value proposition, carrying out customer discovery research, validating the product or service, and creating a plan for how to realise the business proposition.

The whole project takes place over six months, which allows students to really explore their idea in-depth. Specialist workshops in lean innovation, as well as expert startup and pitching coaching sessions, helps students develop their concept.

At the end of the EJ, the teams pitch their proposition to a panel of investors with the winning teams from the Full-Time MBA and Executive/Weekend MBA awarded a £5,000 prize respectively, as well as the new Grand Challenge prize of £3,000, established thanks to the support of Renal Services (UK) Limited and alumnus Stefano Ciampolini.

What is the purpose of the Entrepreneurial Journey and what makes it unique?

The module is an amazing opportunity for students their MBA learnings to practice on an entrepreneurial project. They finish the module fully equipped with an entrepreneurial toolkit to use in their post-MBA career!

These skills are not just useful for those who go on to be entrepreneurs, as Dr Harveen Chugh, Senior Teaching Fellow in Entrepreneurship and one of the EJ module leads says:

Doing the EJ within the College environment and over six months gives students the time and space to explore the idea in-depth and develop their entrepreneurial skills. The EJ is also highly relevant for those innovating within existing companies, as the entrepreneurial method is relevant equally to these different contexts. So this is the perfect takeaway from the module for both their own startup or for a corporate role.

The EJ also offers students the unique opportunity to collaborate with the Royal College of Art design students and Imperial scientists or engineers to build their business ideas. The module is also supported by the Imperial Enterprise Lab, and provides a great opportunity to tap into the amazing innovation and entrepreneurship ecosystem at both the Business School and wider College.

This year our students developed incredible ventures. We profile the winning teams from the Weekend/Executive MBA and Full-Time MBA cohorts.

Reef: optimising time on public transport

The winner of the Executive/Weekend MBA EJ prize and the Grand Challenge prize is team Reef, made up of Executive MBA students Fabio Di Memmo and George Clarkson, Weekend MBA students Flavio Menichino and Umair Patel, as well as Fanghui Song and Irene Liao from the Royal College of the Arts and an external team member, Simone Di Cicco.

Reef is a low cost, real-time public transport app. The concept behind it is to ensure that passengers on public transport are well served with real-time information, ensuring they spend more time doing what they want and less time waiting for public transport.

It leverages smartphones of bus drivers and passengers to ensure that both bus companies and passengers know where their bus is and when it will arrive. It looks to replace the high cost and time investment needed for standard GIS tracking (the GPS systems used in major cities) to bring this level of real-time data to underserved areas.

The idea for Reef came when Fabio Di Memmo, Managing Director, struggled with dropping his children off on the way to school at a public bus stop. He’d drive to work before receiving a phone call from them saying the bus hadn’t arrived. This inspired him to come up with the concept of Reef, where others could share real-time information on public transport to improve its service.

The team’s vision is to save the planet from poor public transport, encouraging more users and giving a more sustainable and mobile future. Reflecting on their experiences on the Entrepreneurial Journey, the team said:

The EJ offers the great opportunity of learning by doing in a very exciting way. We have been lucky to have a great team and we have had a good time together. What we have learned is applicable in our daily work and it is of great value for our current roles and future careers.

Entrepreneurial Journey

They attribute their success to working collaboratively as one team with their Royal College of Arts student teammates:

We genuinely could not have achieved what we did without the whole team. Carrie and Irene brought inputs on all aspects of the project, not just service and UX design. We’re very much one team and don’t distinguish between those studying at Imperial, those at the RCA and those who aren’t studying at all. We’ve all got other commitments that we sacrificed to make Reef a success.

What’s next for Reef? The team will continue the startup and use the £8,000 prize money to deliver a successful pilot to demonstrate proof of concept to transport authorities and bus companies.

Flying Pump: a fitness solution for transit passengers

The winner of the Full-Time MBA Entrepreneurial Journey is Flying Pump, comprising of team members Ziyao Liu, Chaiyong Paniengtong, Luis Saad and Paveenuch Sritragul. Flying Pump aims to transform the way people travel by presenting a fitness solution in transit.

They came up with the idea from spotting the opportunity to offer airport transit passengers an active leisure option to mitigate the impact of long waiting hours at airports, which are usually filled with unhealthy eating and binge shopping. As a team, they agreed that time is a precious gift that one doesn’t get back, and thus felt that their idea could help people to spend their time wisely.

Entrepreneurial Journey Flying Pump

And so Flying Pump was born – offering a space for those who have the motivation to keep healthy while travelling. Flying Pump gives transit passengers access to a professional workout experience in the airport. Features include complimentary clothing and shoe rentals, and opens up opportunities for collaborations with external gyms and suppliers.

Going forward, their business plan is to build creditability by engaging a variety of partners and potential investors before negotiating with the airports. The team are really excited about the prospect of starting a business from the Entrepreneurial Journey.

Hear more about the EJ experience from the team members:

Ziyao Liu

“The structured curriculum of the MBA gave us essential business knowledge and insight that we used to develop our EJ idea. We applied knowledge learned in our Design Thinking module to understand our customers and develop our value proposition to match customer needs. We used tools from the Imperial Innovation Week challenge, including the business model canvas, to convert our value proposition to competitive differentiation. Knowledge gained from Corporate Finance allowed us to establish our financial model for sustainable business growth. We used fundamental marketing terms, concepts, and principles from Marketing to design our marketing strategy and develop business partnerships.”

Chaiyong Paniengtong

“Being an Imperial MBA student opens doors. I found that it was much easier to approach potential clients or partners as student-entrepreneurs on the EJ. This has helped us to gather a lot of useful insights and effectively adjust our business plan. I really appreciated this privilege and would advise future students to make full use of this opportunity in their EJ.

Luis Saad

“From the EJ, I learned that there is no “absurd” idea. While exploring numerous project options during the initial stage, I realised that every unsolved condition consumers bear represents a profitable business opportunity. The EJ pushed us as a team to address one of these existing problems from different insights and backgrounds, and collectively, we could come up with a feasible solution after many practical coaching sessions.”

Paveenuch Sritragul

“Having such an experienced tutor as Dr Harveen Chugh was my favourite part of my EJ. We had the opportunity to explore new ideas and come up with innovative ways to solve a problem, but at the end we know that there will be support from someone who has extensive experience and a positive mindset, to give us suggestions and encourage us to go for something beyond our limit. That was such an amazing feeling that we hope to receive from Imperial College Business School, even after we graduate.”

Introducing the Grand Challenge prize

We were also delighted to present a new prize for the Entrepreneurial Journey called the Grand Challenge prize. The prize is supported by Renal Services (UK) Limited, a company co-founded by Imperial MBA alumnus Stefano Ciampolini.

Stefano earned his MBA at Imperial College Business School in 1994. Today he is a successful healthcare entrepreneur and the CEO of Renal Services, a UK leading dialysis services company.

Stefano was inspired by his Imperial MBA experience and connection to the Business School in the creation of the new prize:

It is exactly 25 years since I participated in the business plan competition at Imperial College Business School as an MBA student. My team was the winner and we went on to compete with the top ten European business schools at INSEAD and received a special award as best technology venture. It was an incredibly exciting and rewarding experience which encouraged me to become an entrepreneur.

For over 10 years I have been mentoring and coaching students at Imperial College to share my experience and enthusiasm for entrepreneurship. By establishing an annual Grand Challenge prize, I wish to encourage the next generation of students at the Business School to let their entrepreneurial spirit loose and present value by creating impactful solutions to current challenges.

The Business School thanks Renal Services (UK) Limited and Stefano for supporting this new prize.
