A year on from the London and England riots
in August 2011, when I was a volunteer serving
refreshments at our local respite centre to over a
hundred Metropolitan Police officers, I turned into a
London 2012 Olympics and Team GB fanatic, along
with most people in Great Britain. Now whilst basking
in this post-Olympics and Paralympics euphoria,
Britain’s economy is still stuck in a rut whilst the world
as a whole is facing multiple challenges all at once.
One of my many enlightened moments earlier this
year was being invited to the 23rd Gordon Cook
Conversations, spending a few days with a diverse
group of high achievers at Windsor Castle. We had
rounds of facilitated conversations on only one
question: Looking at the world ten years from now,
what are your hopes and fears? All seriousness aside,
I have not laughed out loud so much in ages. That
fun-filled discourse also sowed the seeds for my
mid-term ambition, to be one of TIME magazine’s 100
Most Influential People in the World, by 2015. I have
been gathering feedback on a proposed World Inter
Forum, bridging gaps between cultures, disciplines,
sectors, faiths, generations and nations.
Closer to home in London, I am part of a local
community group working on connecting food waste
with food poverty. So much unsold foodstuffs from
market stalls, shops and supermarkets gets thrown
away, ending in landfills, when some families barely
have enough cash to cook decent hot meals. The
situation is complex but not inevitable. We hope
to manifest new social enterprises through this
pilot project.
