Expedition Report
This long-distance cycling expedition in Norway, from Oslo to Trondheim, was undertaken by a single College student in June 2023, with a further aim of promoting cycling, training, and outdoor activities for young people from disadvantaged backgrounds. After investigating the fjords and rivers around Oslo and Drammen the route climbed out of Rødberg onto the mountain plateau, where rolling hills were replaced by long climbs and hairpin descents, heading towards Bergen on the west coast of Norway, a journey involving 8,000m of total climbing over a 500km route. The next stage to Trondheim covered 1,000km with 12,000m of total climbs, several ferries, and having to endure car exhaust fumes whilst cycling through a number of road tunnels. During the journey the student had to endure being pestered by mosquitoes, ticks, and midges. Although most nights were spent camping, occasionally local people invited the student to share meals and provided overnight accommodation in their homes.
