T
his edition of Business Insights takes as its focus continuous improvement.
In many ways, this is at the heart of all that we do as a business school.
We seek to give our students the knowledge and inspiration to build
successful careers when they leave us. We aim to provide you, our alumni, with
opportunities to continue to grow your skills and knowledge. To business leaders,
including alumni such as yourselves, we offer
through
which new insights and perspectives can be gained. And through translating our
research findings into real world solutions, we help businesses and organisations
to innovate and improve.
At the Business School, we too seek to continuously improve. This was certainly
the ethos held by Professor David Begg, who retired this year, during his
nine years as School Principal. We are very proud that during his time, the
School increased the number of students it teaches each year from 550 to
over 1,000. Under his leadership, we launched new Master’s in Management,
Risk Management and Financial Engineering, Actuarial Finance, Innovation,
Entrepreneurship and Management, Strategic Marketing and, in October 2012,
Economics and Strategy for Business. Over the same period, we won over
£40 million of research funding and began our Executive Education activity
that has already reached in excess of 1,700 participants across more than 30
programmes. We are grateful for David’s exceptional leadership.
Whilst the School is appointing David’s successor, I have the privilege of acting as
Principal. I am pleased to report that the School continues to attract world class
students, faculty and business partners. In autumn 2012 we were delighted to
welcome Rustam Ibragimov as Professor of Finance and Econometrics. Rustam
joined us from Harvard and is an expert in extreme events within this field. We
continue to attract world class companies to work with us. For example, academics
from our
have been working with Crossrail
to develop a strategy and framework for innovation. Just a few of the highlights of
our 2012 Distinguished Guest Lectures were talks by Samuel Palmisano (CEO of
IBM), Naveed Sultan (CEO of Citi’s Global Transaction Services for EMEA) and Matt
Brittin (Vice President of Google for Northern and Central Europe).
I invite you to join us in the next stage of the
School’s path of continuous improvement and
development. I encourage you – as I encourage
all our students, alumni, business partners,
Executive Education participants and staff – to
invest time in your own journey. There are many
ways the School can support you in this and many
ways you can continue to engage with your fellow
alumni and the School, such as professional
development webinars, guest speaker lectures,
social and networking events and career support.
